Just checked and my computer uptime is 12 Days 1 hour 3 mins and 4 seconds which I thought windows would have died by now..

To find out.. in a dos window (Start - Run - "CMD" - Enter) type "systeminfo"
Look for "System Uptime" (which will be different to network status connection time if you have been disconnected from the network at any time).

Linux users can just give the number in months :D
 
arr ok so 12 days is a pretty long time . I leave mine on all day for about 12 hours.
 
It doesn't have to mean anything.. It's just I've never known my computer to run for this long without grinding to a halt and thought it might spark up a bit of banter. This is the computer section isn't it :thinking:
 
It's a sign of reliability (a loose sign, but a sign all the same). How long has it been continuously running without a break (ie a turn off or a restart).

I restarted my machine last night so mines only a few hours :$

Maybe it just means that you don't fiddle about with stuff unnecessarily.. I could be doing with more people like you at my work!

These days it's not unusual for most machines here to be restarted automatically by automatic updates.. there was spate of them a while back. Can't have everyone self managed either because they just ignore the messages and never install them.

Yay - I'm good with computers :lol:

All mine does is a bit of processing letters; lots of photo work; and it's always connected to the net

It has a boring life of never going on 'dodgy' websites, and I don't download anything I don't really have to or trust where it's coming from

I even considered using another computer for internet stuff to avoid my main one ever having the chance of getting to know a virus

Clean healthy (computer) living works it seems :thumbs: now if only I could apply that same discipline to my own body!!!

You mean your body frequents dodgy websites :D

My computer does secondary backups of other PC's through the night so there's never really a good time to restart.. I usually just wait until it give's up on me. Which strangely is always anytime after 5 when I'm in a hurry to get away and work is in a hurry for me to do something.
 
All my systems are switched on when I enter the office and turned off each evening.

Used to leave on but saves a small fortune hitting the off button.
 
Something to bear in mind, if you hibernate your computer instead of powering down, the uptime is measured from the reboot to the full shutdown. The clock is stopped whilst hibernated but starts ticking again from poweron. I've had my laptop hit some 30 days as I always hibernate it. I can't be doing with waiting for 5 to 10 minutes for the bootup each day.
 
About 30 minutes today.. as I turn it off when I go to bed. My longest was probably a week with this computer, this was a few years ago when I had a "race" around the world on Flight simulator with a friend.. both of us in single engine propellor plans flying around the equator :p

My server uptime as of now is 94 days but its a rented server and not stationed at my house but in some big warehouse with hundreds of other servers so it isnt effecting my electricity bill :p

I'm afraid I probably qualify as a full geek... I've got unix tools on my PC and I use them a lot... Graham, I'm afraid you qualify too...
 
I have no experience of Linux except for running a few commands such as ls, pico and that's about it, so hopefully that counts as a couple of negatives :D

Anyone can be a geek when you have google.

DD I agree, there's no way that knowing what those commands are, let alone running them at all can possibly count in a negative way towards Geek points, massive amounts of positive points :D

I managed over 2 years uptime on one of the Unix servers I used to look after in my old job. Does that count? :) Stat got ruined when the power went down and the backup generator fooled the UPS into thinking it was going to work.

Power costs too much to not shut down at home nowadays so the most I get is 50 hours or so over the weekend when I have backups running overnight. Linux would happily run for months otherwise.
 
2 Years is a fair time to be live :o, We ahve just been informed our power is due to go off at the start of the month so I better test out UPS's and genny.

I have never played any online or "gamer" games.. nor do I have an Xbox.. so I can slightly redeem myself. Although I do have a PS2 and PSP which I am away to start running homebrew firmware doh.. OK point proven :p

I dont think there's any way to get an exact figure, but both of mine have only ever been 'down' to restart after a software update. So we're talking years, not hours! :p

In comparison, my old G3 and years ago my LC used to bomb at least a couple of times each day. A couple of times an hour if I was pushing it! :lol:
 
I power off machines when not in use. But its quite easy to get months out of sun boxes.

Something I keep meaning to check is what the power draw is on a PC which is shut down but not powered off. At one point I had half a dozen machines in use (before VMs got going properly) and I noticed that the meter did a lot of spinning even when they were shutdown. These days I disconnect them from the power.
 
Just over a day (powercut yesterday), but usually it's a couple of weeks. Normally I restart when the pc starts to slow down and some things feel sluggish, it's like a free fortnightly upgrade!
 
I'm on my laptop at the minute so it's only been up for about 40 minutes or so, lol. I turn this on and off as and when I use it, which is most days, usually later in the day and evenings but today I feel like crap so I'm lounging on the sofa with the laptop.

My desktop has been on for a few days at the minute, it was restarted after some updates. It's usually on all the time and tends to get rebooted anywhere from once a week to every couple of months, depending when updates are installed. I'm sure if it wasn't for updates it wouldn't need rebooting for several months if at all. It's virtually never shutdown though. The last time it was shutdown was when I upgraded the motherboard, cpu and memory about six months ago. It won't be shutdown again unless something else has to be replaced/upgraded. I leave my desktop PC on overnight as I usually have something running, whether it be something converting, downloading or uploading plus I have virus/spyware scans and defragmenting software set to run during the night so that it doesn't interfere with the PC during the day.

My wifes PC is shutdown every night although she has it on all day.
