Lets say, for instance, you are off to cuba to make a book, so you will be doing some portraits and just generally documenting what you see. You will be on your feet 10 hours a day no assistants.

Whats in your bag?
 
General purpose zoom ie 24-105mm f4 to be used for 90% of shots fast prime probably 50mm for low light/portraits a flash gun and a light telephoto like the 70-200mm f4 with a carbon tripod strapped on somewhere.
 
5D3, 35/1.4

Done Hong Kong, New York, Atlanta, Rome, Florece, Pisa and Bolonga using nothing more.
 
Depending on the size of the book, I would (for big pages) probably take the D800, 12-24, 24-120. I would be tempted to take a D7100 as a backup, possibly with the 70-300 fitted. If it was a smaller book and I needed to travel light, I reckon the V-1, FT-1 and 18-200 would cover most bases and the AW-1 with the AW zoom would cover wet use. If necessary (for weight saving), the AW-1 could be used dry as well, saving a few ounces. I would also be tempted to take the Fuji XF-1 or X-20 in a pocket.

Back in September, I did a holiday with a DSLR, a bridge and the 2 baby X compacts. The baby Xs accounted for over 90% of the pictures I shot. Bear in mind though that we have visited the destination many times before so I was pretty much armed just for snaps, although the cameras are capable of photography too.
 
Nod what is a baby x compact? great answers everyone, I think i cant help feel i would go with an x100s which i dont actually own hahah. but yes i think something in the fixed 35mm range. PEOPLE if you have done something like this before then put your links UP!
 
My 5D Mklll + 24-105L f/4, and a lightweight travel tripod, as this seems to cover pretty much everything I need on foreign trips.

Maybe my 430EX ll Speedlite, as the 5D doesn't have a pop-up flash, although I rarely seem to need it when abroad. The 5D Mklll copes very well at high ISO.

CSC + a fast prime or possibly two (standard and maybe a wide and maybe a macro lens) + compact camera (LX5) and cleaning kit, spare battery and charger.
 
Wherever I go I take everything that's in my bag, which is everything I've got (Canon 6D, 7D, 10-22, 24-105L, 28 and 70-300L). I may not carry it all every day but I always take it with me.
 
Mart, George got it in post #14. In my case it's an XF-1 and an X-20 - both extremely capable little cameras. I have quite a few big (A3+) prints from them waiting to be put on the wall in my computer room.

cool man, right didnt know they were called baby x. yes i need an x100s i think and then go and do this assignment!
 
I could be 90% happy with my Nikon V2 or Fuji X20. A lot of the crap we get twisted about (ISO noise) isn't going to show up in any typical book print size. And even if it does, it's not always "bad."
I did China primarily w/ a D300 and an 18-200mm. I had a lot more with me, but it didn't get much use.

But there will always be that situation where I think "dammit I wish I had my D4."
 
For a while now it's been a D7000 with my 18-70 on it. That expanded slightly when I added a 35mm 1.8.

I now have a Nikon 1, so i'll try that out on the next trip. Not taking a dslr will take some getting used to!
 
If it's a BIG trip I'd take D700, 16-35, 50, 70-300 which covers all of my needs (the majority of shooting seems to be done with the 70-300 so I may be tempted to upgrade to the 70-200 f/4).

However, this weekend I'm going to Copenhagen and I'm only taking my 'new' V1 with 10mm and 18.5mm primes which I'm really looking forward to.

I also have a D3200 which I used for lightweight duties before I got the V1, not sure what will happen to it now...

Oh, but I'm seriously considering chopping in the D700 for a Sony A7 so I can have full frame AND lightweight.

It's my most used lens when I'm traveling, I love it. 70mm is close enough to normal to be handily short and 300mm is usefully telephoto, 90% of my landscape shots are taken with it and all of my wildlife shots so it just stays on the camera.

It is the VR version by the way.
 
For my most trips out on holidays etc. I carry about with me
Nikon D700 - MB-D10
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII
TC-17EII (soon replaced with TC-20EIII)
Loads of filters + 10 stopper
Tripod also :)
 
I am an gear junky but have simmed down when it comes to going away with my good lady on holiday and now tend to stick to my CCS system with is made up of a Pany G5 and 6 lens plus flash all in a Tenba messenger bag, small travel tripod and bean bag the last two normally packed into my main hold bag. The quallity is good enough for what I want. I am still tempted to take my Canon 5D mk2 and a few lenes sometimes and if it was a real once in a lifetime trip I might still be tempted (if I could convince my better half it was worth it! lol
 
I'm away at the moment and while I have the Pentax K30 and my 15, 35 and 70mm limiteds with me, it's the Fuji ga645 getting thrown in the bag each morning.
 
M43 body + 3 lenses with a combined range of 14-300mm (FF equivalent) + Lee filter kit. All fits in a Billingham Hadley Pro with room for a small lunch. I'd have to carry my Ultra Rexi L tripod.............it's only tiny though ;)
