Where are the Nikon V1 owners?

I'm surprised that there's little or no mention of the Nikon V1 (or J1) here on TP. Are the Nikon 1 series cameras just for point-and-shoot beginners (not that there's a problem with that) or are there any any enthusiasts here using them as a serious photography tool?
 
I'm not as surprised because the V1 costs about £600 with kit lens. You could get an m4/3 body, couple of lenses and an EVF for that. I guess a alot of people are put off by the relatively small sensor size.

Edit: Just to add, I'd love one if they didn't cost so much, responsive little camera with super fast and accurate AF sounds like fun.

I use one, especially with the FT1 adapter for my FX primes. love it to bits, but it can be frustrating; the well documented auto ISO issue.

instead, I shoot shutter or manual and don't use auto ISO. Focusing is as fast on moving subjects as my D700 in good light, or at least there's so little difference I can't tell. plus, it's the only compact I can use like my DSLR, in the general speed of operation sense.
 
forgot to say - I bought one initially because I was looking at digiscoping setups for ultra-tele [digiscopes run 1000mm plus, but manual focus and f/11] when I realised I could use my existing 300 as an 810mm f/5.6 with full dSLR speed AF... the V1 and two lenses cost less than a decent scope, and offer far more. Then, I realised that the sensor is awesome [ignore the sensor size police and look at the tonality of the images at higher ISO - I'm no snob as I already own a D700]... and realise that, in fact, the 28-80 and 80-300 equivalents are together about the same size as an 18-55 kit SLR lens, or a summarit 50/135 in Leica terms etc.

It's a better camera than the gear-geeks would have you believe. Plus, I always remind myself my of own photographer's mantra... that I could get a better picture out of a box brownie than some of them could with my D700... ever since I did that, forum opinions of gear mattered less and less to me [no offence to my TP colleagues..:nuts:] Good light, good eyes, good brain then good gear is the order of things that make a good photo. And the little Nikon is good gear, no doubt.

What 300mm do you use? I am thinking of getting one of these to use with either my 70-300 VR or 300 f4 so any info on how well these work with the V1 would be appreciated.
 
They are probably all out taking photos....... Nice looking camera but I couldn't justify its price.

I no longer have the 300/4, but the 70-300vr works on the ft1 exactly like it does on the slr. AF speed on the zoom is very much light dependent. Note that you only use centre point focus, but for my style of longer lens shooting that's no issue.

Thanks for that. I must say I am getting very tempted to buy one of these although I have spent too much recently so the price with an ft1 is stopping me for the moment (but no doubt I will give in before too long ).
 
I've not try one out before but i only heard bad things about them. Surely it can't be that bad .......

My dad wanted one of these so he can use my nikon lens while keeping it compact when using the Nikon 1 lenses.
 
Dan, thanks for the information - very interesting.

I had a good look at the V1 over the weekend. The LCD screen and EVF are excellent, and the camera menus, etc are very zippy in use. But it's a shame that Nikon didn't aim the V1 a bit more towards enthusiasts (and leave the J1 as the entry level); PASM on the dial, a programmable function button, and a couple more features in the firmware would have tempted me.

It is getting cheaper though... :thinking:

Not really come across Cameralabs before but just read this enlightening and balanced review there. The V1 & J1 definitely have some interesting features.

Could you post some photos taken with your FX lenses? And how much is a 'ft1' ?
Maybe I should dump idea of getting d800 and get v1 :>
 
I'll get onto it, but it might be next week due to other commitments. The Ft1 is not cheap, £200, but I saw it as an essential purchase so I can share lenses between my D700 and my compact camera.

I will say, though, that I enjoy just going out with the kit zooms; they cover a great range, are good and sharp, and weigh almost nothing. In fact, I often do without the camera bag and just keep the spare lens in my clean down jacket pocket.

Be aware that the demo model in the shops may be running the initial firmware, and it'd need an update before you can attach an F mount lens via the FT1. WEx, for example, had the adapter and a selection of tryouts, but I couldn't play in the shop because the cam needed updating. they might well have done it by now.
