Where can I find an oval, rubber eye cup for my Nikon SLRs?

Never one to worry too much about fashion trends or aesthetics, I rather fancy the idea of whacking one of those big rubber eye cups onto the back of my Nikon 'FE' SLR cameras, to put some distance between my forehead and the camera body and stop the wind-on lever jamming into my head every time I try and compose a photograph :suspect:.

Especially hideous are these oval rubber ones :D, but so far I've only seen them available from this one (US based) seller...

So, does anyone know of a more local (European) supplier for these please :shrug:? The regular, round rubber ones are easy enough to get, but I want a deeper one. Thanks in advance.

Erm, I'm not sure about that one to be honest. It says 6-in-1, but I don't see from the pictures how that would ever fit onto the round fitting which the FE model has :thinking:. This one appears to be for cameras with a rectangular eyepiece :shrug:.

Also, the Nikon FE10 (mentioned in the lisiting) was a plastic-bodied camera with just such a rectangular viewfinder, unlike the round one of my Nikon FE.

Seriously, thanks for posting the link, Scott, but Nikon don't make any of these 'egg shaped' rubber eyepieces (AFAIK). They do the DG-2, which is very much extended, but it magnifies just the centre of the image to 2x and this isn't what I need (it's also 85 quid :gag:).

I haven't had enough time to scour ebay yet (and I expect I'll find something there), but I'd prefer to deal with a real shop if possible. So, if anyone can point me to a UK supplier for one of these ...

So, now that I've found the correct German word for one of these (Augenmuschel), I was able to do a succesful search and found what I wanted on Ebay.de ...

Yes, that's the kind of thing that I was looking for alright :). In the end, I bought two of the ones in the last link that I posted (at a cost of less than a fiver each, delivered).

The one in your link looks like it would fit well onto my D700 though, so if I ever want another (more expensive) one, I'll keep that in mind ;).
 
So, my (two) eye-cups arrived today and I was very happy to find that they screwed neatly into my Nikon FE SLRs (after removing the original flat glass window) ...

Best of all though, I discovered that by stripping down the DK-17M magnifying eyepiece in my D700, I could slide the rubber part of one of these eye-cups over it and then clamp it tightly in place by screwing the central part of the DK-17M back in over the top of it ...

This is great news, as I was looking at paying a lot more (than the fiver this cost) for a D700-specific eye-cup. No need now :naughty:!

Actually, I've just ordered another two of these, as I plan to put them on all of my cameras (present and future). I'm a happy 'togger today :D.

Thanks for pointing that out, Ozei :thumbs:.

As it is though, the flange on the eye-cup that I have just has one straight edge (rather than a groove, which I assume the DK-19 has), so there is no other way to secure it than the way I have done :shrug:.

Still, it's very secure and works fine, so I'm not too concerned about the looks ;).
 
I can't remember if the DK-19 has a groove (I don't really fancy taking it off again to find out :eek:) but it does have a separate metal retaining collar which replaces the DK-17M's rubber rim.

I wasn't really thinking about looks - :) - I tried every possible way of putting it together and it just works better if the DK-17 is completely behind the eyecup instead of protruding into it. The cup becomes more effective at keeping out sunlight, plus the distracting white lettering on the DK-17 rim isn't there when you look through the viewfinder. Also, the cup folds back properly leaving nothing sticking out to snag on the fabric of your camera bag - I found this makes it a tad easier to get the camera in & out of the bag.

Actually, I'm using the metal retaining collar from the DK-17M behind the flange of the eye-cup to hold it all firmly in place.

Honestly, if you could handle the camera and see how well all the parts fit together, I think you'd agree that this non-Nikon rubber eye-cup is a very good fit :).

Hi Scott!

No, the way that I have installed it means that it won't rotate (or get knocked off in the camera bag :naughty:). This is no problem for me, as even when flipped into portrait orientation, the rubber cup is soft enough that it allows me to get my eye into it without pressing hard on my eyebrow.

Ah, I see, you were asking about getting one for the D700 :|!?

Well, I have to say that I don't know how well it would work with a standard D700 eyepiece, as I replaced mine with the DK-17M (magnifying) version, which may well have a different construction :shrug:.

So, please research carefully before going out and buying one of these things, based purely on my 'say so' :shake:.
