jusr remember that the cheapies mean no auto focus or adjustable aperture, so if you want to adjust the aperture its best to buy an old 50mm with aperture ring.

if you get the new nikon 50mm f1.8 (widely available)that has an aperture ring on it so it should work, and it will also be a brilliant lens to add to your collection.
EDIT: i think kerso does these for around £80, and they normally go second hand for around £50-60. the older ai-s model should be even cheaper and just as good.
