Yes
I found this photo in an album belonging to an Aunt.

I'm pretty certain I've seen it somewhere else before but can't remember where!

Any ideas?

I think her brother did go off to weird and wonderful places during his army time but I don't know whether this is actually one of his or just something she got in a magazine (National Geographic maybe??).

I'm assuming it dates from between 1905 & 1925 which is when most of the album is dated from. It's towards the end so probably 1920.

In the early 1900's cameras weren't exactly commonplace and, especially in the forces, those who had them dished out copies of pics to all their buddies so they now pop up all over the place. I found this with my uncle's WWI album that the identical piccies exist in a few other collections. You may well have seen this one elsewhere and without confirmed testimony as to who actually took the pictures it's impossible to know who took the original.

I think he might have had his own as there are a couple of family pics knocking around that aren't the usual postcard professional sort.

I'd just like to know where and when it was taken really.

Luckily it seems the negatives exist for this photo along with a load of others. It's later. In the 1930s and all in Sudan taken by my relative. Lots of pics of camels, people with camels, soldiers and some more camels.

Now just got to work out how to scan 120mm negs!

I mean 120 ones! They do look massive compared to 35mm. I could almost believe they were 120mm in size. :D

If you think you've seen it recently, then there was a bit of publicity when the Foreign and Commonwealth Office closed down it's library collection and transferred all it's remaining stock to a variety of academic libraries and TNA. AP, other magazines and the wider media published a selection at the time. Some details here.

Ta for that. It was ages ago I saw it. Could easily have been something similar and I've confused the two.

Why is there someone on the tree? :)
