Where to buy a new camera, who would you deal with and who would you avoid..

appreciated for any advide ..

I always buy kit in my local camera shop (London Camera Exchange). Allows me to handle the actual piece of kit i am about to buy, keeps them in business, gives me somewhere to go for advice on using the kit, gives me somewhere to go to complain to a real person if something goes wrong.

Amazon is pretty good as long as you buy direct from them. Just be wary of marketplace re-sellers, though most are very good.
 
Lots of choice out there. I've bought from Amazon and DigitalRev. If you buy online you get a better warranty on electrical goods than if you bought them in the shop.
 
Proper knowledgable and friendly service can be found from Matt at Mifsuds in Devon, or Sara at Wilkinsons in Southport. You can't expect to pay grey import prices from them though.
 
I would go to a local camera shop, for me about an hours drive away, to get a hands on look and try initially. Next the "grey "import cameras are exactly the same only not sold through approved official retail outlets. The question to ask yourself is what is more important a local camera shop or cost.
I have bought from HDEW for lenses and can't fault the service. Warranty may need looking into to see who offers what, but I would in future seriously consider a "Grey" import from this company..
 
Restricted range though!
No Fuji, Pentax etc.etc.

Check out first? Where?

If you're using a local shop (even a chain) as a showroom for the internet, you're killing high street retailers. Once they're all gone, where will you go to get hands on before ordering the kit from the cheapest box shifter in the far East?

PLEASE, if you handle (aka shop soil...) a local shop's stock, do them the courtesy of buying the kit from them - use it or lose it!
 
Harrisons, LCE and Jessops for physical stores, although don't expect the best knowledge base at Jessops.

There's loads of other shops that are too far away from me but I wouldn't hesitate to buy online such as calumet, wex etc, then there's Amazon (not 3rd party) of course.

If you want to buy grey then Panamoz, HDEW and digital Rev are all reputable.
 
Forget Park cameras they don't even know what they have in stock. I went there to P/X a couple of lenses + cash for a Nikon 70-200mm lens At just under £1700. After the assistant played about on the computer for about 10 minutes he said " Sorry but we don't have one in stock". My home computer said they did

"funny that " I replied " what is that then in your show case 10 ft behind you then", i had already spotted it when I looked around. Yes it was a new 70-200mm Nikon lens sitting there as large as life. He had not even bothered to go and have a look

When he checked the lenses I bought in he tried the old trick of saying there was fungus in them. I challanged him on this so he went away and then came back saying they were clean. He the sales lad was trying it on thinking I knew nothing and he could con me.
A very DODGY retailer in my opinion and experience
Jessops as it was before it went out of business their cannock branch tried to pass me off a Nikon D300 as new when it already had an open box and check to find it already had several hundred shutter actuations. needless to say I went back within the hour and gave them a mouthful. The then produced a proper new sealed in a box Nikon D300.

Either I have MUG written across my face or camera retail shop staff will try it on if they can. So my advice is know EXACTLY what you want to buy and it is new not a good used one if new is what you are after.

Panamoz all the way for me, I've spent over 10k over the last few years with them, never had any issues at all, just saved £300 odd on a Sony 85 GM.
 
Thanks Folks for all the information.. I like to handle a camera first and get the feel of it.
I am think more and more about a change of camera...:cool:
