Protech mended my 100-400 when it got bashed by a swan and I was very impressed with their efficiency - I was without it for less then 24 hours (it was only 40 minutes away so I could deliver and collect). Unlike Colchester who had one of my lenses for 6 weeks then announced they could not find a problem!!!
I am going by this one experience only but would certainly use them again. They are behind MXV Photographic in Uckfield, Sussex and items can be dropped off and collected from MXV if Protech are closed.
Assuming there are no parts that need replacing Canon should still do it. I use Fixation - www.fixationuk.com - usually and find them very good. The problem will come if there are any spares needed as a lot of them just dont exist any more. My 300/2.8 Non-IS (1st gen) lost the distance scale window and they were unable to do anything about it and thery were a bit reluctant to dismantle it in case any parts keeled over!
