Hi, the wife wants to revisit the lovely city of York- went years ago and enjoyed it and I decided to extend our visit and explore the coast and the national parks but I'm at a loss best places to shoot stunning landscapes. Looking for waterfalls, rugged beautiful coastline foremost. I wonder if anybody can advise best places to make best use of the time. Thanks in advance

I would recommend a day spent at Saltwick Bay and Whitby are side by side, Flamborough has 3 very photogenic areas in the South Landing, North Landing and Flamborough Head, Robin Hoods Bay is quite rugged with lots of rock pools and a very picturesque village to go with it.

As for waterfalls, most of these are to be found in the Yorkshire Dales such as Ayesgarth Falls, West Burton waterfall, Hardraw Force ect but the Dales are a fair drive from the coast.

Its a big county! Lots to see.

York itself has lots of photo ops. Have a look at the following sites, might inspire :)

Whitby is lovely, and all the coast area around there. If you are in York you can head to the North Yorkshire Moors or if you are happy to go a bit further there is the Yorkshire Dales.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is not too far from York, and once there you could look up Yummy Yorkshire (a personal fav). There is Temple Newsam also, Lotherton Hall.

Will keep thinking!!

Thanks very much Alex and Russell very helpful. Very envious of where you live as I'm from Essex which has fake tan and dodgy accents instead of beautiful unspoilt landscapes lol.

The North York Moors has great opportunities but you can drive miles and not quite know where to stop.
In decent weather consider Sutton Bank, Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley, Blakey Ridge north from Hutton-le-Hole.
There's a surprisingly enormous area of mature forest too from near Pickering to Scarborough.
The steam trains go through spectacular Newtondale, it's a fantastic drive from the A169 to Levisham station.
Ravenscar is relatively quiet, good cliff walks to the south.
Whitby is OK, stupidly busy though - best out of season and looks much the same year round (often foggy!)

For seaside locations I'd say Filey over Scarborough and Whitby from a crowd point of view. Massive beach at Filey which is never busy and some nice cliffs too.

Dalby is the forest between Pickering and Scarborough, as 4wd mentioned. Good location and a great restaurant for when you're done shooting.

If you do stop off at Dalby head north a bit to Hole of Horcum, beautiful views if the weather is good.

Also look at Bempton Cliffs nature reserve.

Second vote for Robin Hoods Bay, extremely picturesque.

Look up the Falling Foss area for lovely waterfalls / streams through woodland - its close to the coastal areas described above.

Also Joe Cornish - the well known landscape photographer takes many of his photos in this area, so you might get some inspiration looking at his work.
