Where to purchase new laptop from?

As title really.

Looked at the usual pc world site and would rather dodge them, what site online or even stores do you guys get your pc's from in the uk?

Do you want a laptop or pc? Title states laptop and the main post states pc.

We just bought a toshiba laptop from john lewis as the give 2 years warranty.
 
Dell or ebuyer....
 
Ah yes, laptop is what im looking for really.

Having worked in the IT industry for quite a while I would highly recommend Dell. Build quality and support are second to none
 
Other things to remember, is that laptops are sightly less upgradeable than desktops, so get the spec right?
If you post what you are looking at getting, I can offer my view on it!
 
I purchase almost all laptops / PCs from Novatech and purchase the operating system separate so as to avoid the bloat that comes with so many nowadays.

All depends on what you want the laptop for and how confident you are with them.
 
Hi, I wrote a Newsletter article a couple of months ago, about buying a computer on a budget. It does warn you to avoid buying anything beginning with the letter "A" (Acer, Advent, Asus. But ignoring Apple and adding Packard Bell - owned by Acer).

However, it didn't go into detail about where to buy from. PC World are OK but will try really hard to sell you add-ons and extended warranty as that's where their profits are made.

Avoid Laptops Direct as they may sell you the "wrong" laptop and then you'll struggle to return it. John Lewis is a good suggestion as their after-sales support shoud be great. Otherwise use Amazon.

"Build quality and support are second to none"? Are you sure about?

While I've had a number of Dell laptops with no issues, I would say their build quality or support was anywhere near the top.
 
Actually yes, having deployed thousands in large organisations. Currently working for a company with 15,000 of them.


You always get one bad apple, but the tree is healthy!
 
My experience of Dell is that so long as you keep away from the very cheap end of their offering they are difficult to beat. Support for businesses is much better than for personal users. (I used to work for a company with 1000+ users and we were exclusively Dell.)

The downside is that if buying online you then have to wait 7-10 days for delivery. And, unless you buy the Next Business Day, On-Site Warranty you have to post the computer back to them if you have problems.

But, as objohn says, that's not a frequent occurence. My main laptop is a Dell Latitude D630 which must be 4 years old now. It's running as good as it ever did.
 
another vote for dell here if you avoid the cheaper end (no idea what the budget is though).

again in a business environment no issues with dell kit, lattitude laptops going back to the old D600 still in service for non-intensive users up to the new E6420 and no issues at all that weren't user related (dropage, spillage, general mis-use).

desktops and servers also no bother :)
