Maurizio, if you're still reading, ignore most of the previous replies. They are from rude, judgemental people who ought to know better.

For the type of photography you are doing in low light, you will benefit from the latest sensor technology so I would suggest buying a new camera, according to your budget. You will not go wrong with either Nikon or Canon.

To the rest of you, manners please guys

Well said hoppy - I'm really disappointed with the replies the OP has recieved already. After the kindness shown to me recently with my theft situation this has really taken the shine off TP for me.

Give the guy a break folks. Don't let envy cloud your judgements and wish him well. Us Brits are SO good at discouraging others and failing to admire others for their dreams and apirations.

Maurizio - I hope some of the kinder replies have given you some food for thought. Good luck!

I have noticed that quite often if an amateur wants to start a more professional approach he gets run down very quickly here.
It almost seems like our professionals are a little too touchy.
That being said, it’s hardly surprising as a lot of so called professionals are now being out classed by amateurs with decent cameras purely because some amateurs are naturally more gifted to start with.
That armed with good equipment is a frightening prospect to any professional’s trade.

I have to say, page one of this thread makes very unpleasant reading!!! If you had all treated me like that on my shop thread, I would have run a mile...why the double standards?

I think people really deserve more respect all around, and I would be careful choosing whether to doubt someones ability before seeing their work, it's really not fair.

Too many threads like this, and too many of these new members leaving and telling more of there friends what a bunch of misery arses we are here, and it won't be long before TP no longer deserves to claim to be a friendly and helpful forum.

Gary.

Ok, there has been many "Thats really harsh guys, why all the crappy posts" posts but i'm actually with them on this one.

The OP has had a compact and when he gets a "professional" camera, he will be charging. Did anyone NOT see the thread about the wedding photographer who got sued for the poor quality wedding photographs?

People think its all to easy to pick up a camera and let it do the work for them. The OP might have left because he got a verbal kicking and that gave him a reality check as to how good he could actually be.

Dont come on a photography forum and say "i have a compact, i want to buy a DSLR so i can be a professional" and not expect a torrent of abuse from the people who have spent YEARS studying photography, it ****es people off!

Maybe a post such as "I have a strong interest in photography, i want to learn more and advance in a hobby that i have. I would eventually like to become a pro but need some help getting on the first step of the ladder by buying my first DSLR. Help!"
How many people come on here with a post like that and get lots of really helpful advice? Plenty, its a daily thing.

So, to all the self-richous "dont say that else you will offend him" people, let the kid grown a spine and man up, else he will get no where in life!

Yes by all means give advice but don't be such a keyboard warrior!

Some of the posts/comments made could have been done so in a much more polite manor, not the rude egotistical way they have been.

What I find most halrious is that if the OP had come up to you in the street whilst you were on a photo meet or such like you would have said exactly the same would you??

I hardly think so somehow...:thinking::thinking::thinking:

Maurizio, if it makes you happy, do it...if you happen to make lots of money from it, fair play!

I actually would because i am a miserable barsteward who's opinions are the same regardless of if i'm sat behind a computer or in person.
That fact can also be backed up by Marcusp13 if he still posted on here!

Wise words my friends

The start of this thread makes very unpleasant, and frankly spiteful reading. Some folks could do with a good dose of Christmas spirit :)

I wasn't aiming my comments at you MJ, I was aiming my comments and the posts on the first page.:p;)

Not sure why everyone is jumping all over this guy - he just had some simple questions about starting as a pro photographer.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and some would rather not start as an assistant, carrying the real photographers equipment.

I also plan on maybe doing some pro work on the weekends and no I don't have that much experience, but I do have a lot of marketing and IT experience, so I know that I can get my name out there and attract customers. Do I think I'll do a good job? Yes I do, because I'm motivated and confident and believe that my customers would like my work.

Maybe its worth having a sub section to the forums where pros put there experiences about turning pro there??? then people who want to turn pro can read up on it??? Saves the multiple posts of generic questions, and will also be constructive to the forum??
Under talk business => "Going Pro" ????

somehow I still don't think he meant professional....

maybe it was just a wind up? :D

It exists already!

Look in the business forum stickes and the tutorial section.

Ah nice pointer :) I havent looked as I dont intend to turn pro for 5+ years, and presumed it didnt exist due to all the posts like this one.

good gracious! There's more chips on shoulders round here than the freezer section at Tescos!

I'm afraid like all the "What camera should I buy" and What bag should I buy" they already exist, it just seems that some people have yet to find their way to the search function.

Fair enough if you are not looking but I think of it like natural selection. (HUGELY tongue in cheek comment :D)

You'll still have the same problem, regardless. Just as you still have the "how much to charge" and "which lens" threads. I think it's just a case of biting your tongue a bit and see how the thread pans out first before firing off and venting your spleen at people, who as far as they are concerned, have just asked for some advice on an idea they've been mulling over. After the right advice, most will go away and see the truth, some will take it on board and do things properly, but if this is what they get who knows. They might just say sod it and try with disastrous results.

My comments previously, were not aimed at anyone in particular nor at this thread alone, more at the general problem, and was trying to highlight that although some potential posters don't ask because they're afraid this sort of thing will happen to them.

I don't think any of the pro's feel threatened, but I can understand how it can sometimes get up peoples noses. I've spent ten years on the job training to be the best Generator Engineer I can be, and I have 17 year old kids turning up with a box of odd spanners and a hammer thinking they can do the same as me, but I don't tell them they're idiots I speak to them, point them in the right direction and help them get started. They are the future afterall. There are a lot of engineers in my game who are approaching retirement so we need to fill the ranks from somewhere. If I took the same approach (and everyone else too) we'd be in a very dire situation in ten years time, when the light switch didn't work...

That part rings the truth so much! (well it all does but that part is so important!)

Christ that was harsh...I though I was the [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] on here...

Another potential member lost, I think.

Yes, his initial post was naiive to the point of stupidity, but the opening barrage on page 1 would have made me leave immediately had I been that guy.

How about trying to remember back to when you first picked up a camera and plucked up the courage to ask an experinced photographer for some advice...

How about gently showing him the error of his ways - even the posts offering serious advice came across a bit harsh - especially in the context of what had come beforehand...

...maybe the guy just wanted to take Professional Quality images after 5 years of struggling with a P&S...anyone think of that...?

One reason I never went to a Camera Club after my first ever visit was the sneering looks I got for owning an Olympus OM-1: "Toy camera is it?" "Good for girls with small hands, they are.."
fnarr fnarr fnarr...

Ahem, I digress...

Be nice you lot, it's bloody Christmas...

What? Who said that? Anyone got a match?

Lighten up you lot.

It's nearly Christmas so lets spread a little cheer and get over the pro vs amateur debate. It's been done to death, it's tiresome, there are very talented photographers in both ranks end of debate.

Now, who brought the beer? :woot:

wooooohooo well said !!!

Its Christmas!!!!

I'm sure a lot of actual professionals (of all occupations) jumped in at the deep end not quite sure what they were doing and managed to work it out for themselves to make a success of it.

Steve.

Thoroughly agree Steve.

It really depends on what a person is made of, if you give it all you have and 110% more then you have a chance, a chance that everyone deserves.

Agreed.

I think that the folk with the attitudes that cause problems need to be censored, not the topics.

Folk shouldn't be weary of talking about certain issues or mentioning certain words, they should be weary of being an arse.

Is there a pro vs amateur debate going on? I thought we dissucssing the blatent flaming of the OP and how this trend is not good for the forums 'image' scuze the pun;).:shrug:

I have read many "which flashgun should i buy" threads today, most topics seem to repeat.

I read the title and ignore them if there are too many. But i dont get wound up about it...

Yes people should use the search function, but most people do not know where it is...

People want to know the answer "now" and cant be bothered to read through old posts so start a new thread...

Dont think you will ever stop this....

So much for the season of goodwill then, I remember a chap many years ago joining our company thinking he was going to be the best engineer ever, sadly after the first 2 days it was obvious that he was never going to make it and he himself realised this and left to find another job in a different direction. The point to this is at least we gave him the chance and didn't ridicule him.
Perhaps he's a photographer now :)

If people didn't start any new threads about questions already addressed, then this forum wouldn't be nearly as active as it is now.

This happens on all forums... just get used to it.

I read all 4 pages... I can't believe I read all 4 pages... arrrgh

My take on the whole thread is this .. "ha ha ha ha ha ha" ... plonk!

Kev.

Those were my first thoughts too.

Pretty shocking the way the OP has been treated. OK show him the error of his ways but no need to be so nasty about it. I noticed from day 1 on here how snide some comments are and every time i come on here i notice.

I wonder how many of the comments were made by pro's and semi-pro's?
Probably not many, which means some where made by people who are also hobby photographers

I've just started visiting this forum and all I can say is shame on you guys for being so hard on the OP. Also, a hugh commendation on all the people who stood up for the him.

Why shouldn't he look at opportunities to make cash. I bet he's looking at small gigs where new bands are looking for some promo shots for their facebook/myspace/website or the venue is wanting to put together some posters. If I was in a new band I'd happily pay a few pounds for that service. The impression that you bully-boys give is that this service should only be provided by a fully pro photographer with a £5k camera and £2k lens and charging £500 for some "professional" shots.

And by the way, being a professional only means you get paid for your work. So what if the band can only pay £20 for promo shots? I bet big Mister D3s wouldn't charge his battery for £20.

I work in an engineering company where we make everything from 50p brackets to £1million pound sports cars (come and visit if you don't believe me) and we're grateful for every opportunity that comes our way. All to often we risk losing work to little companies working out of a garage because the client can only afford to pay a small fee.

I'm really angry at you people for berating this person, did he not do the right thing in coming here for advice?? Or, maybe its a good thing this happened because now I can do like the OP did and move on to a different forum where this sort of thing doesn't happen.
