hi all am new to this forum but was hoping some one could give me some advice. not sure if this is the right place to post this sorry if its not.
am hoping to take up photography but am a complete novice at the moment. so have no idea where to start.
want to take pics of people (and hopefully weddings in the future)
where do i start? is it best to get a decent camera (only have a little digital cameram at mo) and start taking pics and see how i get on? or find a course?

if a camera is the best way to go can anyone recomend something that might be of use for me to start with but that i wont have to upgrade to soon?
any advice or tips will be much apreciated :)
thanks all

well you have a few options, spend about £250 on a used 400d, or save a little and spend£450 on a 450d.

im only speaking from a canon POV, as its the only thing worth buying :P, na lol in all seriousness i know squat about any other manufacture

If you don't want to go upgrading anytime soon then something like a 400D would be perfect! The body itself is fantastic for the money, so any money you can put towards upgrading in the future can be spent solely on lenses...it will take some time to outgrow even a beginner dSLR :)

I'd suggest getting a decent DSLR (digital single lens reflex) and start shooting. Nikon or Canon are probably the best best to start with because they are the two giants of the photography world and have a wide range of accessories and lenses (own brand or third party) to choose from. DSLR cameras are the way to go because you can change and add lenses. If you choose Nikon then any lens you buy won't fit a Canon and vica versa. There are quite a number of other brands out there of course, which produce excellent cameras - but these two are a good starting point. Go and hold them in Jessops. Try a Nikon D40x or a D60 as an alternative to the Canons mentioned above. How they feel in your hand matters.

As to learning - just start shooting anything and everything. If you continue to subscribe to this website and post pictures you will learn a huge amount from some very learned photographers. Buy books - beginners guide types are no bad thing to start of with to learn the basics of everything, but also buy books or visit websites by photographers you admire and try and try and copy their style until you develop your own. Download free trials of decent software - like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop Elements and learn to enhance and manipulate your images.

If you're still here in a year - you can consider yourself to have started to learn. Like the rest of us.

And have fun. :)

a book that will be useful is: Understanding exposure - it help me imensly and gave me things to try so that i know what i was doing and when to do it in real life scenarios.
