Which 1D for portrait and low light?

Hi,
I have a 5DII which I will hold on to but am considering upgrading my 40D for a 1D. I am confused as to which of the models is the right one! I can't afford the new mkIV but would like to consider the earlier models.
I would use it almost exclusively for portrait and gig work.

I use a 1d mkIII. Fast AF, higher FPS and ability to shoot at higher isos makes it better for me for photographing toddlers outdoors than my 5D
 
I woud probabaly be looking at the 1DsII if I was in your boat.

A great camera and would probably fit the bill but also add more complications to your life. Which ever camera you choose you'd be gaining and losing. Sure the 1 series would focus quicker and be more responsive in lower light but the IQ from the 5II would be better.

1DsII has great AF until the light gets LOW. Then it is just as good or bad as 40D. On paper 5DII has better very low light af sensitivity:rules:

Have you tried Speedlite AF assist beem to aid with focusing? You don't have to fire it if you don't want to. This is my preferred low light solution.

So keep the 5D II and add an ST-E2 :) Maybe save enough money by not upgrading for a fast prime (or another fast prime if you've already got one {or more}).
