Want to buy a 70-200mm lens for my Canon 550D, seen the reviews or the Canon but just seen a Sigma 70-200 2.8 APO HSM EX foe sale which is better f stop and cheaper, what do you think Canon or the Sigma?
Anyone got experience of both?
 
Would you rather have a Canon 70-200 f4 non is over the sigma model?
 
Well I've never used the Sigma 70-200, but I've used cano 70-200 2.8 and 4 and they both are superb lenses.
Well im sure if you get canon you wont be dissapinted. Go and feel them in a store, take few shots and then decide.
 
Do you need f2.8 - shoot a lot in low light etc? I have the Canon 2.8 and it's a great lens but pretty big and heavy. For many uses the f4 version might be more practical.
 
I'd rather go for Canon.
I've used few Sigma lenses and was't really happy about them ( as I said didnt use the one you're looking for, so can't tell if its good or not).

But as Graham said if you don't shoot a lot in low light and don't need that big aparature you might get f4 version, but consider paying a bit more and getting IS one.
 
I've got the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX HSM II and its an absolutely stunning lens. Easily as sharp as the Canon 70-200 f4 (I've used both), and when you can have a new non IS one for under £600, sorry, its a no brainer in favor of the Sigma.

The sigma is a lot heavier though.

Twice the amount as the Siggy 70-200 2.8 and Canon 70-200 f4 though, and its a lot slower than both.

First, decide what you want to shoot, and in what lighting condition.

If you want to shoot in natural light in daytime, where you can get fast enough shutter speed at f4 or smaller aperture, f4 non IS will do just fine.

If you want to shoot in dark indoors with lots of movements, then extra stop will make a big difference, and IS won#t help, because it's not camera shake, that's the issue. It's the subject moving, and to stop the action, you'll need shutter speed.

If you are shooting fast action in varying lighting condition, again, the extra stop can mean a big difference.

If you are shooting dim lit, but relatively speaking still subjects, then f4 IS might do the job OK.

Think why you want the 70-200mm. It's not a creative/specialist lens, but a work tool, or at least it is for me anyway. So get the best you can afford, and will need.

I have just got the 70 / 200 f4 IS model and it is really great. Was thinking about the 2.8 model but more expensive and bigger and heavier in the camera bag.
 
thanks for the tips and advice all, would be shooting outside 90% of the time for nature and landscape shots using a tripod, no need for the is versions, just thinking for the price of the canon f4 non is then i could get the sigma f2.8 with the lower aperture setting, going to try and find a site which has shots from both lenses to compare, will prob go canon just down to what i know..

If you will be using a tripod and doing mainly landscapes then just get the 70-200mm L Canon non IS f4. Its cheaper, lighter, the IS will be mostly irrelevant due to a tripod and you dont need a particularly large f number for that kind of shooting

Oh and I have it and its a fantastic lens!!

Id go with the siggy if you can handle the weight. F2.8 can be useful indoors
 
I have a Canon 70-200 f2.8, worth every penny (not that my wife would agree)
