I suppose this would depend on what you are going to photograph. If you are going for High Key, then white, if your going for Low Key, then gray or black.

If you really can only have one then I'd pick white for what I do (people).

What type are you thinking of getting?

Have a look at the Photodeals ones, they have colours on both sides, come with a dercent sized train and collapse into a bag.

I have the white/black one.

yeah the collapsible seems like a good deal, i was gonna get them for £50 off fleabay. grey also is meant to be a neutral shade (not a colour) and then white is up a stop and black is down a stop. if it was me i would get grey.

hope this helps.MT.

white is usually +2 stops from grey and black is usually -2 stops from grey.

Grey is good if you want to change the colour as it takes coloured light well, white is goos for white people type shots but does not take coloured light well, for example a flash head with a red gel would look pink when aimed at a white BG.

A black background can be achieved by keeping the light off a grey backgound provided you can keep enough seperation between the subject and the background. You can achieve a white background from grey with light.

My choice for a initial background would be a lastolite type white/grey reversible.
