Which bit of kit next !? (location shooting)

Yes
Hello all,

I've arrived at that probably familar stage where I have too many wishes on my wish list and need to prioritise them. Obviously the reason why I'm here, is that I'm lost as to which would benefit my images the best, so hoping for some experienced advice/comment.

Background:
K, so at the moment I am looking at doing some shooting indoors at home.
I am NOT however looking for 'studio' style with all those white backgrounds and clinical (no offense!) look.
Besides, as my largest room is about 4mx4m, I'd never acheive that.
In my naiivity, I'm quite taken with the challenge of shooting in a confined space, unusual locations, and curious to see what I can make with what I have to hand.
Happy to have the furniture and fittings of my house become part fo the image, rather than wash them away.
In my imagination, this would lead to more gritty, original and quirky results.

Current equipment:
> Canon 400D
> 50mm f1.8 (seems good for head/shoulder)
> 18-55mm kit lens (wide end give a full portrait in small spaces, but restricted apature)
> 30-300 II USM (not much use indoors)
> Yongnuo YN467x1, YN460x2
> Light stand & wite brolly

Stuff I'm considering is either glass or lights:
[1] Glass
[1a] Given the confined space, was thinking of a wider angle fast prime e.g. canon 28mm f1
[1b] I also do landscape work so the canon 10-22 would give me wide angle for both genres, but less apature which I might miss for the indoor stuff.

[2] Lighting
I've been told that pound for pound (or dollar for dollar), lighting can improve images just as much, or more than, glass.
After doing some recent ourdoor stuff recently in this autumn sunlight, I am begining to believe that statement !
Not sure my Yongnuo's are really going to give me best results on a full-length portrait, and just about everywhere I'm reading 'softbox' 'softbox' 'softbox'.
No experience and no idea if these will help my foundation of lighting, or just 'wash' the model with a stereotypical 'this was done with another softbox' look. Don't forget I want 'arty' and not 'commercial'.
If I did go that route, AlienBees seem to be popular on forums I've visitied, and would fill a full length softbox.
Also believe tha these can be used as head&pack and taken outdoors on location (next year when I've saved even more money for the power pack).

..... eugh ... I'm lost now, and you can probably tell that from the rambling nature of this post.

Help !?!?!?!?

Many Thanks
Simon

Canon 28mm F1.8 is nice, as is the Canon 35mm F2 (and the 35mm is cheaper).

Wide angle - look away from Canon and you will find a Tokina 11-16mm. Not perfect for portrait work but has it's uses in that area if you spend the time learning the limitations. But it is F2.8... and it works a treat for superwide landscapes.

Thanks for that, yes the 35mm is a LOT cheaper .... so continues the only dilemma of 2 pieces of half-decent kit, or 1 piece of rock gear !

The Tokina is bemusing me though: A 2nd hand Canon 10-22 isn't that much different in price form a new Tokina 11-6 (from searches so far) .. so I guess I still might consider a 2ndHand Canon over the Tokina.

Ah, but F2.8 ... vs. F3.5 .... that kinda pus a different spin on things !
hmm ... some pondering to do there.

I don't think you really need that extra speed on an ultrawide lens, typically they are used at much smaller apertures than that.
