Which body/glass to buy???? or go nikon

I'm selling my 5d mk2 and going back to crop just for awhile until i can afford a 5d mk3, so on the side of which body to buy (dont want 7d) and lens to use its a tough one, do i go :
40d,50d,60d??
canon 17-55 2.8?
Tamron 28-75 2.8?
canon 70-200 f4
sigma 70-200 f2.8

And for the long stuff e.g aviation,wildlife ect the siggy 150-500 OS

I shoot alot of portraits,landscapes,aviation and looking to have a dabble at astrophotography over this winter.

or do i bite the bullet and give nikon a blast

Any help would be apprieciated??

If you're saving up then the best option is surely to buy whatever is going to depreciate the least.
I'd be thinking 40d for the body in that case. None of them will match full frame IQ, so if you're going to sell it again soon I don't see the point of say the 60d.
Again with lenses, the 17-55 is a belter but will have to get sold when you go back to FF.

hi phil, unfortunatley i need to free up some cash as ive been out of work for nearly 4 weeks now but fingers crossed i have a job interview tomorrow :D, regarding my gear my thoughts are that im going to sell up my gear and make the move back to a crop body with 2/3 decent peices of glass. body wise im looking for something with good IQ, decent iso performance & a decent af system, lens wise im looking at something like a short zoom for landscape, portrait work, something in the 70-200 range again for portraits ect and a nice telephoto for the aviation/wildlife ect.

Budget wise i should have about £1500 for the lot

Im a canon man at heart, but im willing to give nikon ago if it means i can get a better package for my money. so the question is what do i opt for???

Any help would be greatly apprieciated

I don't suppose switching to Nikon will help much, unless you have an itch you need to scratch - someone I know took the leap and loved it.

As you're dropping back would it be worth moving to a 650D - I know a fair drop but the tech may make up for it plus the articulated screen could open up new avenues, failing that I can heartily recommend the 60D - I had one and preferred it to the 7D.

Sorry to hear that Andy.

The Nikon route is especially good for getting excellent quality at stupidly low prices. You will hear much more from people that are more qualified to advise on Canon gear but as a Nikon shooter I would recommend the following;

D7000 body - I'm sure this is the closest match to the 5D2 in terms of IQ. The 7D would be up there if it wasn't beaten on ISO by the D7k.

£550 used.

Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 - amazing lens for the price (I think it should be 3x as much!) - £75 used.

Sigma 70-200mm OS - Rivals the canon and Nikon equivilents but for £800 new.

Lastly - a 2x converter for your 70-200mm OS which will give you the reach needed for your longer requirements. This combo will give you much better results than the sigma 150-500mm. I have provided a link here to illustrate the difference.

Good 2x - £200 used.

That's everything for £125 over budget but Haggling and getting the sigma second hand would obviously bring that figure down to something like £1525. You could also drop the 2x until funds clear / get a sigma version for £100.

You've also covered 18-400mm and have a 70-200mm f2.8 as sharp as the Canon 70-200mm IS USM 2.

I want the above now...

If the 650 is an option I just read its coming up at 1230 today on Amazon's black Friday deals today

Hi Andy

Just to throw a spanner into the works. I've just spent some time shooting with Sony gear and if you want some really nice kit for little money to tide you over then you could do A LOT worse than a Sony a700 (regret selling mine) with some legacy Minolta glass which is great quality and dirt cheap.

Just a thought.

If you don't mind going to the dark side, the D7000 is an absolute steal at the moment, especially nearly new/second hand. Great magnesium alloy build, lots of hardwired controls, dual SD slots, not to mention great high ISO performance and speed. The 18-105mm VR kit lens is more than adequate, and I'd argue it's one of the best kit lenses you can buy.

Get a the 70-300mm VRII and a 35mm 1.8G for low light and you'll be sorted.
 
Sorry to hear of your predicament Andy.

Have you thought about dropping back to a 5Dc? I know it doesn't fit all your criteria, but it keeps you on the FF train, and of course with Canon as well :)
