Good afternoon,

I am wanting some advice on which body/bodies I should purchase. I have finally saved enough to get serious.

A bit about what I want to do.
I want a camera capable of capturing astro, sports (horse racing, motorsports, cricket), night/low light and planes/airshows.

The options I have is to purchase 1 body (thinking 5D MIII) or 2 (6D + 7D).
Firstly, are there any cameras I have overlooked?
Secondly, are the cameras I'm thinking of good ideas for what I have intended. I really want to have an all round capability. The 6D for nights + astro and 7D for sports/anything with pace.
Is there a 7D alternative at roughly these prices - under £1,500?
Could the Mark 3 do it all? The only other benefit of 2 bodies is the extra reach provided by the 7D.
Compared to the Mark 3, is the 6D a good investment? Spec wise, they are not far off. The AF system is considerably lower-as I have little experience with this type of AF system, could anyone provide their opinion on its performance.


I understand that a number of factors make a great picture (lens, body, skill) and buying the newest or most costly does not promise this, but as I don't currently own one, purchasing a recent a newish camera will mean it will last a bit longer when it comes to developments.

There are other manufacturers than Canon to choose from! While the extra apparent reach that a crop body can give might be appealing, simply cropping into a FF image can give exactly the same effect and with a high enough pixel count can give the same IQ as well.

before you go and spend your cash could I be nosey and ask what experience you have using a DSLR? I don't want to come across as negative but using an entry level DSLR can be quite a big leap if you have never used one. To purchase a pro body is an even bigger jump and could possibly be a bit off putting.

Good luck and I wish I could save money lol!

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies.
I have been using a friends unwanted 550.

The reason I'm looking at these cameras is I feel I'd rather grow into a camera than grow out of it. And I don't want to be upgrading anytime soon.
So I've been trying to work out the best all rounder - 5D III or 6D + 7D.

And I know there are other brands, but I have found as many positives with Nikon as there are with Canon and the same for negatives, so if I didn't choose one I would just be going round in circles :lol:

how about a 1d mk4, a big body but has amazing AF, 1.3 crop, 10(?) fps and pro build so weatherproof and pretty much bombproof. Should pick one up for the price of a 6d and 7d combined
