I have (it's my wife's really) a Nikon D3000 and after some of the negative comments about this camera might go for either a D5000 or a D90 (both used). Any opinions on which is a better camera? I realise this is asking how long is a piece of string but and comment would be appreciated. I am not a professional but have used the older film cameras since the 1950's.

Thanks

Brian

Of the two the D90 as David says, better body. It also has an in body focus motor so it opens up AF on many more lenses such as Nikon AFD type lenses.

Thanks, I have just ordered a used D90 in mint condition from mpbphotographic. I will be using my wife's lenses until I can afford one of my own. I assume that as the lenses we have, have built in focus motors that it will not be a problem with the D90?

Thanks again for your inputs

I've just look on their site and used D90s are cheap now! I bought my D5000 new but only went for that as the D90 was still pretty pricey 4 years ago but I would've preferred that just for the in camera focusing. I think you made the right choice given the small price difference between both bodies now.

Don't discount a cheap d80. Bought my daughters on here for about £120. Less than 1500 activations. Trouble is she can and does use my 105 DC and 20D lenses !

Thanks for all of your replies. It seems I made the right choice (for once).

Well, I received the camera. Apart from very slight pitting on the monitor screen it looks absolutely brand new. The manuals have never been opened (I wasn't expecting a full paper manual) neither has the strap which is still unwrapped. All I have to do now is learn how to use it properly.
