Camera dilema...

Just got a 5d mark ii

Not a lot is moving in the second hand market...but which to keep 50d or 5d mark i...

I shoot 24-105 & 70-200...both L f4...

So I figure a little general advice never goes a miss...and everyone on here knows their gear...my usual set up was 24-105 on the 5d and 70-200 on the crop for the x1.6...

But I love full frame...

i had exactly the same as you ( 50d & 5dmk1 ) and upgraded to the 5d mk2 the camera i let go of was the 5d mk1
the reason i let the mk1 go rather than the 50d is i wanted to keep the crop sensor and the 6 fps for wildlife and air shows mainly

but...

what i havn't worked out yet is if i crop a 5d mk2 image to 15 mpx the same as the 50d what will the difference really be in the images ?
i have a feeling it isn't going to be much

Well, the 50d has better AF and FPS, so it might be the difference between getting the shot and not! No point in cropping a blurred 5dII shot to 15mp!

That's one way of looking at it.

I'd disagree with that. I don't find the iq on my 5d "far better" than my 50d. If I were to sell one it would be the clunky old 5d.

The only slightly better iq of the 5d isn't enough to forgive its many other short comings compared to the far slicker 50d IMO.
 
I sold my 5D2 and 7D and bought a 5D3 as I really love the FF look, but I ended up missing the extra reach of the crop for wildlife and aviation and I also missed having a second body so I got a second hand 7D for backup. I find it works perfectly for me so if I was in your situation I'd sell the 5D and keep the 50D.

i thought the AF in the 5d mk2 is the same as in the 50d
iv'e used the 5d mk2 and the 50d for wildlife and aviation shots and have no trouble with either concerning AF the main difference is FPS which is noticeable

Not quite what you're wanting to do there, but if you crop down a 5D2 to match the field of view from a 50D you'll only be working with 8.2mp. Not that bad, but no way matching a 50D for pixel count.

The advantage of full frame is not so much the pixel count but the increased sensor area, which is 2.56x (crop factor squared). So if you crop a 5D2 down to 15mp, you'll still have a lot more sensor area than the 50D.

i thought it would of been a higher pixel count to be honest thanks for doing the sums saves me trying to work it out and probably getting it wrong :)

It's an easy mistake to make, but the crop factor is linear, not area. Basically crop-format sensors are a bit under half the area of full-frame. A crop factor of 1.4x would be exactly half full-frame.

then you need to consider the strength of AA filter (5d3 wins) and lens resolving power at certain aperture. This is where crops start losing out some extra

Hi Stevier

I'd keep the 50D and sell the 5d mkI - I know you love full frame, but the 5DmkII covers this very nicely and the 50D gives you the extra FPS and crop factor if required...
 
...how about sell both and get a 7D to go alongside your 5D mk2??

Nope. All cross type AF points on the 50d, with the 5d mk's 1 and 2 you only have the one one (centre) point as cross type. Makes a big difference with AF servo where I find the 50d miles better than the 5d.

I'd keep the 50D to get some extra reach with your long lenses.
