Hi Everyone :wave:

I am looking to buy a big girls camera, My first DSLR! :)

I have been doing some research into different makes and models of cameras and i have decided to go for a Nikon but which one?

I have looked at the D90 i like this one but then i have seen others too the D3100 and the D7000? i am so confused!:thinking:

Which one is best? I have no idea about lens either? Did some help on this subject please:help:

Prob the best way to go is go into a shop and try the feel of these 3 camera's taht you have a liking for- althou the d7000 isn't available yet as some have stated, 5th Nov iirc is the date that they're available for order/buying.... Then see how each feels in your hands...
 
:eek: The D7000 is over a £1k - bit much for a 1st time dslr camera where as you can get the D90 & D3100 with a kit lens for half the price..

Yeah i will do that go into the shop. just wanted peoples opinions on the said cameras if they have them and what there like ! Also on different types of lens ;)
 
Hi. Its a tricky choice first off. I'd imagine budget has to be your deciding factor. What sort of photography are you interested in at present? If you want landscape or, say, macro, you'll want to choose a lens best for that. I'd avoid the cheapo 'do it all' lens if possible. I like Steve's Digicams for reviews. Might help you make up your mind. You can get some reasonable second hand lenses off fleabay or second-hand camera dealers. Get the camera body that suits you (weight, grip etc) so do as suggested and try some out in a camera shop. Then shop around for a good price. Don't forget a spare battery and a couple of memory cards...

HI, Thanks for all that information :thumbs:

I am at present doing a photography course just a basic one to get introduced to it then i will do more courses in the future. I would like to be a professional photographer. I would like to do portraits, weddings, pets, etc. I like landscape and buildings also.

My budget , not sure about that really i ld like to get the best if possible if i find something i like i ll get the money to pay for it somehow!!:cuckoo:

Next step will go to a shop and try some out. yeah i have been doing research and looking at prices will look more into this.

I would like a new one to be honest.

Battery? memory cards not a problem.

Forgot all about it being the 1st tomorrow :bang:

You'll have a wee prob with the D7000 thou as it has been released for sale here yet... The D90 is a cracker of a camera - been a few reccomendations for that as thats in your list - I've owned it before I upgraded to the D300s then upgraded that to go FF to a D700...

If there are any D3100 owners I'm sure that they will give you their thoughts on it, as well as the D90 owners... I think that there is a thread on here just for the D90 owners....

Still thinking the D90 not sure! I will be going to look in the shop soon at all the different cameras when i get a chance ;) How old is it now 2 years?

Prob about that... :thinking: Whats wrong with 2yrs...:shrug:

The D700 is just over that (I think) & thats still going strong :p

I had a similar dilema when i got my first DSLR two years ago! Whatever you get you will grow out of it after a while so i would say get the best you can afford. Iv had a D60 for two years which is cracking to be honest, iv just got a D300s as Im now doing events so need a better fps but eventually would soon love a D700 and go ff. The best advice i had at the time was try all the cameras out , ALOT... keep going back , the one to go for is the one which feels best in your hands, close your eyes when trying them. Any of the DSLR you have mentioned will give you great shots...

Oh I have a 3 friends with D90 and they love them to death, great cameras, well built to last.....:banana:

That's the best thing to do, see which feels right.

I just got my first DSLR on Friday and went for a D90 - had the advantage of being able to borrow a friend's for over a month so knew I enjoyed using it. Yes D7000 looks great but its a lot more money and starting out I'd rather put that into lenses, D90 is just at the right level for me, love it. :D

My two pence worth is you need to go to the shop n try them all.

Secondly,
- how much ar you going to invest?
- do you like photography lots?
- what do you prefer taking pictures of?

If you really like it, going for a d300s/d300/d90 second hand might be good. If you are spreading the cost, jessops used to do an interest free loan for 6-12 months. Might be worth asking about.

A colleague here is interested in the d7000 moving up from an entry d40. Mainly because the d7000 has more options and a high iso for low light pictures. Plus 16mb instread 12 for the picture size.

If you are still learning and unsure whether the creativness will flow, try second hand and look for d80 or d90. The entry ones are too restrictive (I feel) after a while and still cost a bit :)


Also the lens you get with it. Depending if you like macro, landscape, portraits, wide, etc... If your budget is tight, then you will want one or may be two lenses that do what you want really well.

I got my D90 on interest free credit from Jessops, price was same as the other reputable internet dealers as well.

Thats great you could borrow your friends and get used to it. I ve only got a little compact camera but i borrow my bf SLR camera at the moment but want to own my own as i want to do this professionaly in the future ;)

And how much do u pay if you dont mind me asking? and for how long? to be honest i will proberly have to go down this route if i got it now now!

D90 was 799.99 in currys

699.99 with 18-55 is what I got

It's 799.99 with the 18-105 though.

I got it on the 6month interest free credit - I was planning on getting a D3100/D5000/500D outright, so I was able to put down a £300 deposit and get some other bits this month too.

I am currently doing a beginnners course in digital photography started in October. I will be finishing in December! Then i will be looking into doing different courses. I want to be a professional and do weddings, portaits, childrens, baby, pets and so on in the future.

I am going to be looking into doing some work experience in a studio.

What type of lens will i need then for the work i want to do ? Macro? Wide ? Thats my guess proberly wrong!!:lol: And portrait!

I am going to look into jessops.

Oh and i love photography always have, i am just getting more and more into it now ;)

It's got a bigger "zoom", and that's about it AFAIK. I'm going to be getting one of the 18-200mm Nikon lenses anyway, so spending the £100 extra on a 18-105 was pointless for me.

Currys had a deal for a £60 discount code I think which made it £739.99 but that may have ended. I got it in Camulet last week with the 18-105 for £739.99 (its £749.99 now though - prices seem to fluctuate a bit.)

Think i was in currys two weeks ago and it was 799.99 i will do some more research into prices and lens thank you ;)
 
question - Did the nikon d3100 come out this year?

I found it on jessops for £499 thats a good price right ? is it better than the D90 ? It comes with a lens 18-55mm vr ??

What other lenses would i need to do weddings , portraits and so on ?

The Nikon D3100 came out just over a month ago. I'd say the D90 is still probably a better camera though.

The D3100 doesn't have a AF motor in the body, so you can AF with less lenses.

Hi Katie

Having read what your doing, is there anyway you can borrow a camera from someone to start this course? From what youv said you are really very much at the start of photographic discovery which is cool and were I was around two years interms of DSLR ago and I think you maybe better off just borrowing something or getting something off ebaby until youve learnt what basic things are such as auto focus etc...... just going on my own personal experience......

I wouldnt even look at getting lenses yet if i was you and if you do get a camera just stick with the kit lens it comes with for now. I think once youve started your course everything will become clear.....:thumbs:

Also which camera magazine does a great comparison table so you can look at all the spec of all the cameras and easily compare what you get for your money.......:banana:
