Which Camera?

Hi Kate,
For what it's worth, most of the cameras mentioned have video capacity in some form, if you are not interested in movies and don't mind spending a relatively small amount of money on a learning curve, have you considered a used D50, D70 or D80 ? All these have internal motors so you will be able to auto-focus with any Nikon lens, and then perhaps when you have had time to decide what type of photography interests you more, then trade up to a D90 or whatever. I use a D50 which are available for about £200 or less with a 18-55 lens, and I would think the D70 would be about the same, although the D80 is probably about £350. I use a D50 and to be honest were it not for the small LCD requiring me to put my reading glasses on to review each shot it more than does everything I want.
I don't need video and the guides that come with the newer models, and if I could get a similar spec model to the D50 with a 3.00" screen it would suit me, but I can't as they aren't available. Anyway, enough about my needs, this thread was supposed to be about yours, and a suggestion for a "cheapish" way of finding out what suits you. I hope this has helped.

Hi Katie

Having read what your doing, is there anyway you can borrow a camera from someone to start this course? From what youv said you are really very much at the start of photographic discovery which is cool and were I was around two years interms of DSLR ago and I think you maybe better off just borrowing something or getting something off ebaby until youve learnt what basic things are such as auto focus etc...... just going on my own personal experience......

I wouldnt even look at getting lenses yet if i was you and if you do get a camera just stick with the kit lens it comes with for now. I think once youve started your course everything will become clear.....

Also which camera magazine does a great comparison table so you can look at all the spec of all the cameras and easily compare what you get for your money.......

I started my course in October, So at the moment i am learning about photoshop and camera functions and so on!

I ld like my own new DSLR as soon as to be honest, at the moment i borrow my boyfriends SLR which is the fujifilm one. no lenes can go on this, All i ld like to get is a camera body with one lens for now.

Yeah i am at the start got a long way to go lots and lots of learning

Thanks, The type of photography i wanna get into are weddings and portraits.

I need a big screen too! No not bothered about anything else on it but taking pictures.

Go for a d80.
Lenses :/ portrait ones prolly one or so of the following
- 50mm f1.4 G Nikon
- 50mm f1.4 D (cheaper) Nikon
- 30mm f1.4 Sigma
- 85mm f1.8 Nikon (I think)

I can recommend the 11-16 for the wide angle shots (church/all family gathered).

Check on Flickr for the types of images produced (the 50mm f1.4d and the sigma 30mm are on the link in the signature)

Camera I'm using is the d300, although low pro, has loads of options and is great. But if you go for the d80, you should be able to get a few lenses too. And its only whilst you learn. You can pick a d700 or d7000 or a d300s later on. Perhaps even a d3...

UPDATE: went to Curry/PC world to look at some cameras and i held the D90, D3100, D5000 - Well i loved the D90 just like i thought i would the others NO! I must admit they were lighter but and i just love the D90 even though it was heavier!! It felt right!!!

It had the 18-105mm Vr Lens on it. I love it I love it!!

It will get welded to your hand and you just wont be able to let go.

I paid £799 at Currys for my D90 a couple of weekends back. Jessops currently shows £749 but nowhere near me had ANY in stock when I was after mine (and they were 799 then).

It's a cracking camera - way, way above my abilities, which is good as it's going to last me a long time and I can grow into it. At least I know any pants shot I take is my fault and not the cameras

Yes, some of them are, but you can also use practically ANY NIKON-fit lens on the D90 which opens up a whole host of cheap(er) lenses on eBay and the like.

Specific lenses that I am after are also considerably cheaper than similar lenses I was looking at for my Panasonic G1.

The heavier weight was something I initially worried about as I'm quite petite and wondered if I'd be better with a lighter camera. But a friend very kindly lent me one to try for over a month and during that time I took it out for a day with my local camera club - by the end of the day I realised I'd been carrying it about and using it for about 7 hours and simply didn't notice the weight. I think that was the day that confirmed for me it was the camera I wanted.

Its been going down a bit price wise, but its still a popular model so check stock availability locally.
