For general purpose.
If you were limited to a choice of
new or used 450D plus kit lens
new or used 500D
new or used 550D
used 30D
used 40D
Which would you lean towards?
I was in Jessops today and the salesman was telling me the 550D was indeed a step up from the 500D because of the sensor.
or....do you have any of these and are you happy with it?

40D is an absolute gem of a camera. I have been using this camera for a while. I don't think the 50D is miles different. 500D is a feature packed camera in a lovely package but it does suffer from excess noise on low light compared to the 40D.

I don't really rate the 550D as an upgrade over the 500D. I would say if you don't have a camera, then for a small difference get the 550D, but it isn't something I think a 500D user would upgrade to.

I have had 30D and compared to the 40D it struggles more at night and the screen wasn't as good for reviewing, but other than that quite similar cameras.

500D and 550D gives you the added advantage of video, but using this is a skill in itself and not just like a camcorder, which some people expect.

I had a 350D and it felt too small, particularly with a zoom lens. I'd go for a 40D, mostly because it 'feels' better to hold. You have to go and try them out.
 
I would say 40D if you don't want to print HUGE images. Lovely camera!!

500D is a good one (what i have now) I have the 500D because for me the 40D plus lens was heavy.

Had a 550D which produced poor/soft images but i am convinced it was the camera not lenses or me. I did a lot of testing. Others have had similar probs with the 550D. Shame as it is a great camera other than that. I'm sure millions have been sold that are spot on.
 
Can really recommend the 40D, thats what I plumped for, tried the 550 in the shop and it didn't feel right so I bought a used 40D for a great price. The money I saved on the 550 went towards glass. Get good glass and you keep it, the bodies will come and go over the years but good glass, you'll keep.

This is basically the same issue as going from a 500D to a 550D. Only upgrade if you're desperate for another 3 megapixels. The 60D is also the first Canon with a tilt screen.

Another issue to consider is that the 50D uses compact flash whereas the 60D uses SDHC.

This is the major reason why I wouldn't upgrade to a 60D. What on earth would I do with all those compact flash cards?
