Hi Everyone,

After been out of photography for three years i'm looking to get back into in again and after discussions on a previous thread i've decided to go down the Nikon route. I mainly shoot motorsport, wildlife and some landscape although the first two are my main subjects. I'm looking to get quite a few lenses inc Nikon 300mm f2.8 and the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 but my dilemma is do i get a D7100 DX body or the other i'm looking at is a D810 FX body. The D7100 looks a bargain at its price and obviously suits motosport and wildlife with its faster fps etc or will i regret not getting a FX body. Any advice is welcome as i want to try and get it right first time and i appreciaite the D810 has only just come out so it could be too early for decent reviews yet.

The D810 seems like a refined "dream camera". 36MP monster, and 5 fps with a good buffer? Wow. Just wait for real reviews (dpreview.com is perhaps the best source for that), as my thoughts on the camera are only based on specs, which is not how a camera operates. It would also be wise to handle the camera before buying it - as well as its competitor, the Canon EOS 5D Mark III - to see if its size and ergonomics suit you.
 
If you can afford the D810 - by which I mean afford to feed it good glass, and you can live with 5fps - then it really has very little competition.

I would seriously wait until there are a few more out there though - Nikon's recent approach to r & d has relied a little too heavily on the purchaser.
A wait will almost certainly save you some dosh too!

Well, yes.

This shows the drop for the D800 - if the D810 follows the same trend then you could save yourself the cost of a good lens or two in maybe a couple of months.

Plus any glitches will come to light as reports of the first wave hit the internet.

If you can wait I'd be inclined to pick up a used D700, use it for a while and then sell it for much the same as you paid for it.

EDIT to reflect post below - doesn't have to be a D700, just anything good that won't lose you much in the short term.

Then pick up a D810.

Depends what you want to do I suppose. Just been away for 3 weeks using a D700 and D7100 side by side. If I could only keep one now it would be the d7100, no contest, the iq is a different league. I would imagine the d810 is also awesome iq, so for people and landscapes I'd go for fx, wildlife dx.

Wow, wasn't aware of those price drops. Looks like it's a much more active market than I typically see in my country.

If you're going to do that cheap-camera-for-now thing, then it should definitely be an FX camera, in my opinion at least. Get accustomed to the FX format, don't buy a DX camera and get used to it, just to sell it after a few months. I'd sacrifice some image quality attributes if needed. The D700 is a great camera.
