Which Canon Beginner Lenses

Hi Togs,

I've just acquired a Canon 40D.
Now I need some Lenses.

As I'm relatively inexperienced I wanted your learned advice on which ones I should consider.

I would like to try a bit of everything, from taking images of the kids, to Nature, be it Landscapes or Wildlife and would like to try some sports as well, mainly football.

Times are hard as we all know, so I'm not looking at spending a fortune...Would upto £200 be enough for each lens?

I expect I need a Prime, mid-zoom & a long zoom.

Hi,

I'll jump in first with probably what others will also tell you;

Prime - 50mm 1.8 "nifty fifty". Cheapest canon prime with good image quality and pretty basic build/AF that just works. I think everyone on here has had at least 1! I've had a couple over the years and sold them from time to time due to not getting massive use personally but for £70 it's handy in your bag. I prefer my 85mm/1.8 because I like the longer focal length and better build/AF but you're looking at nearer £220-£250 used.

Mid-zoom - Tamron 17-50/2.8 non-vc. I've had one of these for the last 4 years and it's my workhorse lens on the 40D. I've shot weddings, landscapes and studio with it and it always delivers. Not the quietest AF but definitely recommended and sharp from 2.8.

Zoom - Canon 55-250is. I've got one of these in my bag for zoo visits etc and the quality it delivers compared to its price is amazing. I had both a canon 70-200/4is and non-is before it but downgraded to save some cash and haven't really missed them although they are better build/AF and sharper when viewed at 100% but for most shots I was happy to make a £300 saving!

I would suggest the same ones as Steve.

The Tamron can be bought from Amazon for £265, the 55-250IS for £120 from Kerso (flashcamera) and the 50 for £80 new or £50-60 in the classifieds.
