Which CF Cards

Makes sense. I know what you mean, raw files can sometimes be a pain to open and go through. :)
 
I use FastStone Image Viewer to view the embedded jpeg in the raw file, fast & free.

I'm considering going for a couple of these 8gb ones too. Does the fact that its 'fulfilled by Amazon' mean that if there are any problems, you deal with them?
 
Guys, should i opt for an UDMA card? Can someone recommend a good 4gig CF card that doesnt cost the earth. Thanks

Yep get a UDMA card, and lets be honest compared to the rest of our kit no 4GB card is going to cost the earth.

I think most will find any card will last longer than their camera, this is why I say get a bigger card than you think you need. 4GB was huge on a 20D but will be tiny on a 5D III.

I think your going to find a rather limited range of 4GB cards nowadays, they are just not wanted that much now as most people want 16GB plus cards.

So all my cards arrived.. the 2 32gb sd cards for backup.. I really dont understand how or why i havent done this before.. and the 2 8gb

problem now is.. all my CF cards have 2 folders and start at 00001 when i have them set to continuous...only happened with the new card setup.. what do i need to change so they dont keep starting at 0 ?
 
Have you formatted them in camera?
 
When I format a card I get two folders, DCIM and MISC. there is never anything in the MISC folder.
In the DCIM folder there is another folder 100EOS1D and the file numbers start ***_0001 with *** being whatever initials you set it to.

Once the 100EOS1D file number gets to ***_9999 a new folder is made 101EOS1D and the sequence starts all over again with the file numbers starting at ***-0001
 
I just formatted a card... the 100eos folder is still there anbd a nnew one created 104 ...was 103 ..and the filename is reset to 001

so its ignoring the 100e folder and every time i format in camera it creates a sequencialy new folder and starts the filenames again... this is the same on both cameras.. i just formated the same card on the other mkIV and its ignored the usual and started folder 105 and filenames reset again
 
just loked on the 32 GB backup card and thats gopt folder 001 to 005

so thats the problem...

but how to sort?

I considered buying some duracell ones for myself however on their own site the only reference to speed is this: "With read speeds up to 90MB/s are possible with the newest multi-channel controllers and SLC NAND flash memory."

It doesn't have any mention to the write speed of the card and most of the store links on their site no longer stock the product, some of the reviews said the write speed can be poor.
 
Very strange, I would try formatting in the PC and then in the camera, if that no worky then contact Sandisk or return to sender.

thats what the backup SD card does.. then the newly formated CF card uses the same folder number as the sd and when it created a new folder it starts the numbers again... it needs to not use the same folder name... so CF never uses folder 00 it always uses the same as what the sd is up to :(


how are you setup?
 
The only time I get your symptoms is when I create a new folder.

I have CF and SD set to record to multiple.

To start with both are formatted. After a shoot I download all the images from The CF card to PC and backup and then format the card in the camera. I don't format the SD.

Repeat this with a few shoots until the SD card is full and only format once backup is a deffo.

Sometimes I will create a new folder for a new shoot or part of a shoot but only on the CF card. I just let the SD card fill up and delete when full.
 
Never bother with creating a new folder, but reading admirables post I can see times when it would be useful.

Question:

I'm at an event and create a new folder or two so I have 001 002 003, when I next format the card will it go back to 001 or will it create the next folder number ( I have my camera set to continuous counting)


On to Kipax problem, just a thought but have to tried to format each card in the camera alone. So just have the SD card in and the CF slot empty when formatting the SD and vice versa, and a low level format on the SD

When the card is formatted the new folder No is 100EOS1D, I'm guessing the 5D folder will be 100EOS5D? see post 57
