which cokin p holder on 17-40mm when shooting at 20mm or under???

hi all! i am going down the cokin p route for my creative filters & wanted to ask if anybody has any issues when using the regular cokin p holder when shooting at 20mm or under as the cokin site recommends that you purchase the wide angle low profile cokin p single filter holder when shooting at focal lengths of 20mm & under i think it apparantly reduces vignetting or something!

I have the slimline holder but I don't have a 17-40mm, sorry... but I just wanted to say... The holdrs are only, what? £6 or £7? Buy one or both the standard and low profile holders and see if you're happy with it/them and if you're not you've only lost a few quid.

I think the only difference with the wide-angle holder is that it has one slot instead of two. Which will reduce vignetting, but not much.

P-System is pretty useless with super-wides, you'll struggle at around 24mm and less. You need a 100mm filter system.

From what I'v read even the one slot wideangle P holder holder vignettes between 17-20mm, the only way to avoid it with 85mm filters seems to be to hand hold.

You will need the Z pro holder (100mm) and adapter ring. I have the Sigma F3.5 10-20 and this was what was recommended although I can't comment as it's still on back order!

Are you talking FF or crop camera? (on my phone so can't see if it says on your profile). My Dad uses Cokin P filters on FF and gets vignetting below 20mm. I use 100mm filters and they're fine at all focal lengths on FF with 17-40mm.

If you're shooting on a crop sensor then a one slot holder should be fine.

I use a 17-40 as well as a 10-20 with hitech (same size as Cokin P) on a 1.6 crop 40D although I've not tried them on my 1D Mark 2 which has a 1.3 crop.

edit - notice you have a 5D in your details so you may want wider/larger.

On full frame I used to have to be careful of vignetting at 24mm with a 3 slot holder and just the slightest risk with a one slot holder.

I've gone to Lee 100mm filters and have no problems, that is the way I would suggest you go.

Lee filters might be more expensive but if starting again I think that's the way I'd go if only because Cokin have a habit of putting stuff in their range to tempt me only for me to find that I can't buy it anywhere and it's been on back order forever.

right i am now going to sell the cokin p stuff & go with the cokin z-pro! i also wanted to ask if anybody knows whether the cokin z pro filters & lee filter's are the same size and can be used universally in both the lee & cokin z pro holders as i dont know which holder to purchase now!

For that lens you really need 100mm x 150mm filters, otherwise there will be vignetting, weeping and teeth grinding. The lens is too expensive to be plagued with Cokin, so really look at Hitech or Lee.

i have managed to buy myself a lee filter holder & 77mm adapter & have just purchased a cokin z-pro 100mm sunset filter & a hi-tech 100mm nd grad 0.6 filter all of which is brand new & has cost me slightly south of the £120 mark so hopefully this will be suitable now to get me started!
