Right, I’ve got the Tokina 11-16mm lens and I picked up the Cokin P wide angle filter holder at Focus this year but it hasn’t even been taken out of the packet yet because I haven’t bought any filters to put in it yet. The main reason I haven’t got the filters is because I’m not sure what I should be buying.

I have to admit, I’m not really a landscape photographer, it’s not really what inspires me, I’m more of a people person but most of my photography buddies that I have the opportunity to go shooting with are in to landscapes and architecture so I’m making the effort to give it a try.

So what do I need as a basic set of filters to help me out with getting some nice landscape type shots from my UWA? I’m assuming some kind of grad filter and maybe blue and orange filters to enhance those skies and sunsets.

Also, where is the best place to get them from? I’m not after anything expensive because I’m really just giving this stuff a try. If I can get them for about £5 a filter then I’ll be pretty happy especially if I need no more than 4 or 5 different filters.

Come on TP’ers, knowledge me!!!!!

Hi Rob, have you looked at Kood filters, generally not as expensive as Cokin and they fit Cokin holders although they do their own holders too. I think, (I have not looked) they used to do a Landscape Kit and a Portrait kit which should get you started. If not, some grey grads, a polariser and some Neutral density filters should start you off well.
Some will turn their nose up at Kood cos' it doesn't have the C name, but I have never had a problem with them. Of course you could go for the tops and buy Lee filters, but you'll need a mortgage!
Enjoy.

The blue/orange filters aren't really needed all that much on digital because you can just change your white balance.

If you're going for a UWA, say, something like a Sigma 10-20mm, with a regular Cokin holder, you're not going to be able to shoot wider than about 14mm on a D300 or other crop body (or the holder starts to appear in your shot).

There's a wide angle version of the holder, but it only holds a single filter, so again, if you've got an ND grad in there, you wouldn't be able to use your coloured filters anyways.

Personally I use a 3 stop ND grad, and a couple of regular 3 stop grads (all Cokin). But I also have a 77mm B+W 10 stop ND on the way, then I can screw on the 10 stopper and switch to the wide-angle adapter with the ND grad and get an extra MM or two.

Just the ND grad would get you started just fine. You only really need the regular NDs if you want to start slowing down your exposure. Wilkinson Cameras in the Mall in Preston should have the 3 stop ND grads for about 20 quid.

get yourself on to the formatt website and buy yourself some hitech filters. They are good for the price. The 85mm filters fit the cokin P system perfectly.

FYI - The Cokin Z-Pro adaptor, after removing the front filter holder, will allow the user of 2 (100mm) filters and doesn't vignette on the Tokina at all at 11mm.
