Which compact camera to buy?

My wife is looking for a good compact camera and asked me to find her one…but I know virtually nothing about which are the best compacts so I just need a bit of advice.

She mainly wants it to use it with our 1 year old daughter, and the main requirements are:

• Compact/small enough to fit in her bag
• Good video facility
• Good for indoor shooting without flash (good ISO range with low noise, or low f number lens, or hopefully both)
• Up to £300
• Preferably manual controls

I suggested upping the budget and getting a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, but she’s not bothered about changing lenses and just wants a compact.

Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated! :)

The killer here is indoor shooting without flash. Is there a "compact" that can manage this?

I suspect that something like a GF3 with a wide-ish aperture pancake lens might be better for lower light shooting than a compact. Just because it's a CSC doesn't mean that you have to change lenses :D

I've had an S95 for a few months now and it's a very versatile little thing....and very good in low light. I've used it for gig photography amongst other things and, for a compact, it's excellent. I've heard very good reviews about the newer S100 too.
 
S95 or the even more awesome S100 - proper compact but proper camera.
 
As above Canon Powershot S95/100.
 
That's brilliant. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I think I'll suggest the s95 and s100. They seem small enough to be convenient and get good reviews. Also both have f2 lenses as well.
