Looking to get a new computer, but know little about the new intel chips, so which is better/fast for photoshop/lightroom/DPP

Q6600 Quad Core™ 2.40GHz, 1066Mhz FSB, 8MB
or
E8500 Core 2 Duo Processor 3.16GHz, 6MB, 1333MHz
or the iMac
2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor

Also how good is a DELL ULTRASHARP 2408WFP monitor and compared to a 24" imac

Don't know really. The iMac is currently on offer as refurb on apple store at a good price. Myself, I just upgraded to an octo core 2.8 Mac Pro from the same refurb area. Finding it really fast, had no qualms editting a 640mb scan last night (although Photoshop can't use the 2nd CPU, so there is no advantage to having the eight cores over the four at the moment in PS).

I would get yourself an E8400 Core2Duo which is the new 45nm version also has 6mb cache

Nothing is about that really utilises the 4 core so you may as well get the fastest chip you can for the same money, get some Corsair ram and an overclock in the region of 3.9ghz is possible.

In photoshop terms they will all be good but this is the fastest so the best to buy, although budget for at least 2gb dual channel ddr2 ram as well as photoshop will chew that up before the cpu speed is an issue.

4gb DDR2

All in with chip about £280 plus about £40 for graphics, £60ish for SATA2 HDD and you are laughing, rapid system.

I use the 24" monitor at work, and I can't get technical or specific, but its the best monitor I have ever used.

Looks like your thinking about buying the dell I just ordered!! Your also doing the same as me, weighing up mac vs pc :)

Gary.
