was having a look on ebay and there's a lot of different options. Anyone got a recommendation for the one to get? I quite like the style of the one on the D300

I use the giottos glass screens, both on the D300 and the D3, much better than the plastic thing that was originally on the d300

You don't need one on a D3!!!!!! Don't waste your money! It's a bit like using filters for 'protection' on expensive Nikon lenses - a complete waste of time/money!

Personally,I prefer the plastic ones, when (not if) the glass ones break after a knock they can end up damaging the lcd, which kind of defeats the purpose...

Codswallop.

I cannot find anything at all for the D1x - well OK there are a couple of plastic cellophane things - I wanted a sun-screen/hood thing maybe but looks like I am out of luck.

I use a GGS one for my D300 and I love it. So if you can get a GGS for the D3, then go for that.

What, until you put a nice big scratch on the screen? The GGS protector I use on my D300 has saved it from many a scratch.

The screens on the D3 and the D300 are made from different materials. That's why Nikon provide a screen protector with the D300 and not the D3.

AWP's right, unless you're recklessly carelss you don't need a screen protector on the D3.

Rather than risk damaging it in the first place, surely it makes sense to fit a protector? I mean it is not like the image quality will suffer is it........

Please yourself - I'm not wasting my money! :)

thanks! My screens are perfect - and no 'protector' in sight - if it had needed one Nikon would have provided one. In fact screens on all pro bodies are hard to scratch!

While the D3 screen is scratch resistant, dosen't make it the same as a filter on a lens. A slight scratch on a screen isnt really a problem. If you have a scratch on a lens then thats £1200 down the drain.

I use a lens hood all the time - protects and improves image quality! Haven't scratched a lens ever - in forty years almost daily use!

Yup. My mates D3 has a very chunky scratch from a GGS that cracked after a minor knock shooting football. After cracking GGS 'protectors' are tricky to remove without further scratching too.

I've never bothered with my D3 and it's still scratch free after 14+ months

It won't affect image quality, but it will affect the use of the screen.

Any screen prtector you buy won't be made of as sratch resistant a material as the D3's own screen so the 'protector' will be scratched when the D3 screen wouldn't. You'll then be looking at your LCD screen through a screen which is likely to pick scratches up thus reducing contrast and making it harder to view in bright light. What's the point?

It seems to me that there are two camps in this thread, those who say you should get a screen protector, and those who don't. The fact that the latter group is made up of people who actually own D3's says more to me than anything else.

Even in harsh use the D3 screen doesn't scratch. Mine has had salt from seawater on it - wiped off with my hand, or a coat tail - doesn't scratch. It is very tough in fact.

Filter in front of lens though - or I get salt spray on the front element. Sorry, that just isn't going to happen.
How do you get salt spray on the lens? from the powerboat you are in chasing the powerboat you are shooting, when you hit a wave, the spray comes up and is all over your lens, camera, everything. Especially with low to the water shots with wide angles.

A filter on the front keeps it off the lens. A polybag and rubber bands keeps it off the camera.

Simples.;)

I'm with the don't bother camp, the D3 has effectively got it's own built in LCD protector with the nails hard crystal face Nikon kindly installed. Got two of them that have been used daily for two years and neither has so much as a smudge on the outside of the LCD. One does have some moisture behind it but that's nothing a screen protector would have helped with.

:)

No significant scratches on either of mine after 6 months out here not taking particular care of the external appearance...
The ones that are there were there when I signed for them, which is wierd as Woody only did 'grip & grins' here in Camp...lol

Until I read this thread I was firmly in the camp of 'protect' and usually get GGS screens.

I appreciate that the D3 is a workhorse and probably has a scratch resistant LCD, but are 'lesser' models more prone to scratching?

If Nikon are using inferior materials on consumer models surely that is a bit penny pinching?

There can't be that much difference in actual cost can there?

So are we saying that if a camera is supplied with a protector it needs one but if Nikon don't supply one then it is obviously a superior screen?

Thanks for all the replies guys, didn't think such a simple question would generate such interest

I think that pretty much settles it :)

Does that go for the D1x as well? Might account for the lack of any on the market... but is the screen anti-glare then?

You accuse Nikon of penny pinching - but you won't stump up the extra for a higher spec camera.

Who is the penny pincher here? Nikon for offering a lower spec at lower price or th ephotographer for choosing the lower spec/price and then complaining it hasn't go tthe higher spec on it?

Horses for courses

C'mon, be fair. Yes the D3 is a pro camera and needs to be more resilient.
But how much extra would it be to supply the same quality lcd on a consumer camera?
