Morning all,

Firstly let me say I have been using this site for a while and has provided me with some much needed tips and info, so thanks for that! Now I require a little more.....:)

I am about to purchase a general walkabout lens, will be used for everthing from motorsport (also have 70-200), landscapes, taking photos of agricultural machines and of course general people/portraits.

My choice (feel free to expand) is between the canon 17-40 F4L and the Canon EF-s 17-55 F2.8is. The question is which one? I have no intention of moving to full frame anytime soon as I have just purchased a 7d, but any opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Welcome to TP!

Definitely the 17-55 IS 2.8.

Easy choice for me, I've been lusting over one for months!! As good as the L but better range, has IS and is faster.

Second the 17-55, bought a secondhand one and its superb.

Far better than any other lens I have had in that range and believe me there have been a few

You will get dust in it though, but doesn't seem to affect the image at all

If you don't need the IS, have a look at the Sigma/Tamron/Tokina f2.8's of a similar focal length range.

You'll save a packet and none of them are regarded as duffers.

Me, I have the Sigma 18-50 and its pretty good... I wouldn't buy the Canon/Nikon equivalent because I can't see it being that much better for a load more cash.

Thanks for that everyone, very prompt!

My original feeling was the 17-55, but i thought id ask in the hope that i didnt have to spend the money! I will look into the other options desantnic so thanks for that.

Another question, what review sites do people use? Thedigitalpicture seems quite good, any others?

Another vote for the 17-55 here. Just got one a couple of weeks ago, and find the extra 15mm at the long end, plus the constant f/2.8 invaluable. I've put a UV filter on from new, and so far have no specs of dust under the front element. When I had the 17-40, I also had the 50 f/1.8, and now I feel I have the best of both in one solution.

Photozone also seems to have good reviews ...
