Which film scanner?

Dear all,

I'd appreciate some advice on which film scanner I should buy...

I have hundreds of 35mm film strips that I want to convert into digital files, and since it will be a mammoth, never-to-be-repeated task, I want to buy a scanner that will give me excellent results. I am based in the UK and I am looking to spend around £200 ($350ish). I would pay more if it meant getting a much better product, though.

Models that I have looked at so far are the CanoScan 8800F and the CanoScan LiDE 700F.

Would anyone recommend one over the other? The 8800F seems to have a better specification - is it really much better than the 700F for my needs? And does anyone have any other recommendations?

Your advice will be very gratefully received.

Welcome to TP.

Zero warm-up time for the more expensive scanner. Having to wait soon starts to grate!

Flatbeds do not give the best results, but for £200 that's pretty much all that's available.
There are some cheap dedicated but they don't improve on flat beds.
I don't believe there's a lot to choose between flatbeds either, though the epson 4990, V700 & V750 are the best of the bunch.
Dunno about the 8800f, there are probably a few scanners no better or worse than it in its price bracket.

For hundreds of 35mm film think speed. Dedicated scanners 6 to 8. A flatbed 24. I use the Epson 4870 scanner and two combi`s Rx520 and RX620. They are OK by me.
