Which filter brand for a wide angle lens (82mm thread)?

No
I need a new front filter for my 10-20 lens.
I've looked at several manufacturers websites but can't be sure what is the one for me.
My gut feeling would be a Hoya Pro-1 UV.
Others are Hoya HD, B+W (no idea of actual model), Kenko or the new Zeta.

Do I need a UV or will a protector filter do?
I can't say that I've noticed less haze with a UV filter.

I'm also after a circular polariser. I was going to get a 82mm and use step down rings for my other lenses. Would that work? Any downsides doing this?

There are countless threads discussing the merits of using filters for protection, I'd suggest you use the search function and have a read.

Or.

To cut a long story short, UV filters are a waste of time on digital cameras, protection filters are too and can only degrade the image quality. The only time to use a 'protection' filter is if you are shooting in very dusty conditions (i.e. sandstorm in a desert or a rally with cars throwing grit everywhere) or maybe near salt water.

Save your money and don't bother...

Thanks. I did search for filters in this thread but didn't really return any appropriate results.
The reason I need one is my current filter is damaged so that must mean I need to replace it as a front element is much more expensive.
I normally remove them if in a safe environment.

I'll be perfectly honest, I hardly ever even use lens caps and none of my lenses have every got scratched - the front element is far far far tougher than you think, for real protection you should use a lens hood. Your choice though...

By the way, circular polarisers tend not to get used on ultra wide lenses as at such a wide angles the polarisation varies across the scene and leads to and uneven effect. That's not to say you can't use them but its worth going into it eyes wide open.

Finally, on UWA lenses you need to get good filters which are very flat as otherwise vignetting is a distinct possibility.

Thanks @Nawty for that.

I understand what you say on wide angles but I was under the impression that, as long as the sky was out of shot or cloudy, there would be no issues.
82mm is my biggest front end so just wanted to cover all my lenses with a step down.
