What filter should I use for general use and lens protection on my Panasonic g10 and what is the difference in use of the various uv filters i.e. 1a 1b 2a etc. and do I need to remove uv filter before using additional i.e. polariser, star etc .

UV filters are really just for protection of the lens and don't really serve another other purpose.

You need a 52mm filter for the G10, and you can leave it on and just screw others on to the top of it.

As for the 1b 2a etc, no idea, but as they are protection just buy a cheap one.

You don't need filters for general use at all, and UV filters don't serve any purpose on digital cameras. They're a hangover from film.

You can use a UV filter, or a plain glass one, for protection if you want to. There's a lot of controversy about this. Many of us prefer a lens hood for protection, and only fit a clear filter in dodgy conditions - blowing sand/dust/spume etc - but others swear by them. I think you can safely make up your own mind about this because there's no right or wrong choice, but I don't advise you to use a cheap filter. Get a decent one. There's less risk of distortion and flare.

We see loads of uncoated uv filters bundled with punter's cameras and I sometimes do a demo by shooting into the light with the filter both on and off. The flare with these filters can be massive. Grab a Hoya or even own brand multicoated filter from 7 day shop and you'll see much less flare shooting into the light and none in normal shooting.

Yes, best not to stack filters, take the Uv off before using Polariser.
