Which flash for macro?

Looking to dip my toes into the world of wee things, but previous experiments haven't been great as I've not been able to get the lighting good enough to stop down sufficiently to avoid shallow DOF. Anyone got a recommendation for a flash for macro use, for Nikon? Was going to go down the Marumi route but have read a lot about iffy build quality, plus they now appear to be £150 and not £99 as when they appeared!

The obvious one is the Nikon R1 kit, can be had used for around £300, only thing putting me off is the need for CR123 batteries. I'm aware I could get CR123R rechargeables, but anyone who owns this flash kit able to tell me how many pops they get from either CR123 or 123R's? Also, is the TTL preflashing from the onboard speedlight atrocious? Could I avoid TTL pre-flashing by using my SB700 as a commander?

Is there anything else I should be looking at? Very open to suggestions! I notice Metz and Sunpak have ringflashes available but they're not exactly cheap and I'm not sure if they're any more versatile than the Nikon kit...

Apologies for the barrage of questions :)

Search `coke can diffuser` or Brian Valentine (LordV) on Flickr, for some brilliant macro stuff.
