Which flash for Nikon D50

Hi Everyone

I am a complete newbie to the world of DSLR so I apologise in advance if any of my questions are not clear

My current equipment set up is as follows

Nikon D50
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm lens
Sigma DC 18-200mm lens

I am looking to add a flash to my current set up and have a budget of around £200 (£250 at a push)

Should i just go for the obvious choice of an SB600/800 etc or are there other makes of flash that will perform the same task for less money?

My main use of the camera at the moment is general family stuff (a lot of which is indoors) however I am looking to get into studio portraiture shooting at some point so does this affect my decision of flash?

I also think I have read the D50 does not have a commander mode? How will this affect my use of flash? If I wanted to use an off camera flash, or a slave flash does this cause issues? (apologies if the terminology is not correct!)


Would I be better off purchasing a cheaper flash and trying to add another lens to my kit?

The SB600 or 800 will be great, but save yourself a wedge and get a Nissin Di622. Does pretty much everything the SB600 does.

As for wireless. You will be able to shoot off camera as a slave. This means your pop up flash will fire an off camera flash, but you will have to set the flash output manually. This isnt as hard as it sounds, especially with the Nissins. Its just one button to adjust the power higher or lower.

I used (and still do) this method with my 3 Nissin flashes. I usually lower the power of the pop up flash to as low as it will go. This is usually enough to fire the slave, but not affect the overal exposure of the scene.

A nissin Di622 should be around £100 give or take, or the MkII version is a little more for a few extra features.
 
the d50 dosnt fire the flash off camera ,, i think you need an sb /su 800 on top for that

No you dont, as I said, shoot as an optical slave. The Nissin will see the on board flash and fire.
 
Thanks for all your advice so far, I have to admit I am still just as undecided as to what to get :thinking:

Am i correct in stating that the SB600 is now discontinued and has been replaced by the SB700? If so does the SB700 offer anything above and beyond the SB600?

I have to admit the price of the Nissin is very appealing however from what I can deduce you have greater manual control with the Nikon eg finer adjustments to power are available, and it has an auto backlight setting for fill.

Has anyone any experience with the Nissin DI866?

Also I have seen a few SB600's for sale on ebay etc. Are their any pitfalls to buying a second hand flash?
