I dont know if a Nikon SB400 is suitable ?...may not have some features of the SB600 ... dont know

but I got a mint SB400 for £70 here in Classified for my D40...

SB-400 is a great little flash, good for bouncing, pretty powerful, recharges fast, protects your camera battery, works really well through the lens with the Nikon system as you would expect.

Limitation - head only rotates in the horizontal meridian, so if you use the camera in portrait mode you need to bounce off a wall. No manual settings, although it works so good in auto I've never felt like there's anything I wanted to change

SB-600 looks like a step up, if you need a fully swivelling head and off-camera.

You pays your money and makes your choice! ;)

Not sure why you'd buy a second-hand SB-600 at that price when you can get a new one for a tenner more. Flashes can be abused (overheat) so I'd always buy new.

true.. but on advice from FITP i bought a clone TTL off-camera cord ..cheap as chips ! - and can now place flash off-centre on lightstand - better for portraits anyway ?

cheers
