Which genius wants to help on USB and camera not connecting ??

Hello all,

Been tethering my Canon 5D Mkii for a few days now, fine.
All of a sudden, EOS Utility stopped working and i cant connect the camera to the PC. Windows doesnt pick up the camera when i plug it in.

I have established that the camera is at fault due to trying :

Camera -> Mac with cable 1
Camera -> PC with cable 1
Camera -> Mac with cable 2
Camera -> PC with cable 2
All the above using EOS Utility or DSLR Pro Remote

Neither work, so must be the camera.
Now is it simply that my USB out on the camera is broken? as i cant find any setting that i may have accidentaly switched (no settings regarding USB in fact).

Has anyone got any obvous things that im not doing that might help.

Thats what im thinking. Bit odd just to go mid shoot though.
 
Have you tried turning off then on again :D
But really, a battery out reset *might* help.

Ive taken the battery out. Not for any great length of time (min ir 2) and didnt fix it.

is there a setting in the camera menu telling it you will be using USB?

Good question. Dont think so as failed to find camera on both pc and mac.
The pc doesnt even come up with "camera connected" usb driver as it used too each time i connected it.
 
Or, just in case something subtle has changed is there a "factory reset" option?

Theres a reset settigns option which was done, nothing. Might try the firmware approach before seding it off to fixation.

Have you tried connecting a different, known working, USB device to your PC or Mac since the problem arose?

If other USB devices don't work when connected, it's possible that the USB driver has become corrupt. I have had this before on PC and it's easy enough to fix, on PC anyway (via device manager - one of the USB hubs will show with a warning symbol, right click it and reinstall the driver).

Ta, had a look at that and all seemed in order.
Tested all the ports with all cables and other devices. Seems to be all working.
Just doing FW update to see if that helps.

Oh well.
FW2.1.1 is now on and still the same.

Thanks for the suggestions, but im pretty sure now its hardware related.
 
Have you tried to uninstall EOS utility and all other Canon software and the USB drivers and done a re-install ??

Remote possibility, but worth a try :-)
 
There was a thread on here recently where someone had started shooting tethered, and the slight force inevitably applied to the camera's USB port because of the lead moving a little caused it to fail, and a proper repair was necessary. I'm 99% sure it was a Canon body, but I'm sorry that I can't remember where on here the thread was.

Cheers pal. Sounds familiar. Usb cable was taken out and put in a few times so its got to be.
Now im hoping it can be fixed cheay and quickly :) please ?
 
Just thought id add this :

Had 2 quotes. Make of this what you will .

1staidrepairs - £120 and then 4 emails, 3 phonecalls trying to get me to send me the camera.

Fixation - £499 as the usb part of the main board that will need to be completely replaced.

So 1staidrepair are TOO cheap and dont know whats actually wrong or fixation are lieing.

Looking for a local shop to look at it now ;)
 
What did 1staid base their quote on doing?
 
Fixation are usually bang-on, if a little expensive. Their service is good.

Try Canon Elstree - they seem nice people whenever we've dealt with them through work.

Hmmm, I think they'll take your camera in then once they have it send you another, slightly higher quote!

Of tend to think this was a strong possibility

Give Canon @ Elstree a ring and speak to them .
 
Have you tried it on a mate's PC? Same result?

If you are hooking your camera up to the PC just to get the photos off then you could try just taking the card out the 5D and buy a card reader - you can pick one up for a couple of quid.

Nah i use it for tethering. Well that was until i got an 8gb Eye-Fi. Bloody superb.
Put it through its paces at an event last night.

Eye-fi and iPad both connected on same network as my Mifi.
Photo taken, 10 seconds later its on the iPad with the customers begging to give their money for an amazing show of tech.

Cant recomend the eyefi highly enough. Superb.
