which gets you closer zoom or pixels?

AS above really if I have a d40 with a lens that goes to 200mm which would get me closer , a lens with an extra 100 mm or say 5m pixels more so I could crop tighter?
or am I missing something?

Probably the lens but it'd be quite close, need to do some maths to be sure.
But there's no dispute on quality, better lens with fewer pixels (lower pixel density) gives higher quality results.

As long as you buy a half decent lens then that will always get you a better result than cropping an image.

Depends on the quality of the glass you're using now. If it's not able to resolve any more detail than what you can currently see then it's going to be a bottleneck.
