Which Gitzo for your 600mm F4?

Subscribes to thread., as I'm looking for a suitable tripod for my 400 - 2.8.

Any other good options/makers for 5kg+ lenses, at more affordable prices ?

You obviously need a sturdy tripod for a lens like that, but I would have thought the type of head was more a priority. Depends on what you shoot, but if it moves, a gimbal would seem to be the type of choice.

Then stick it on a big Gitzo, for preference :) (Actually, I would take a look at Benro - excellent Chinese Gitzo copies, and they also do a Wimberley gimbal copy head - quality is said to be right up there, but prices are a little more down to earth.)

I use either a 1348 (which is essentially the same as the 35XX series) or a 5530S both are up to the job of supporting either my 600 f4 or 400 f2.8.

The 5530S is the one i use in the sea for all my surf photography, it gets a good hammering throughout the year, but has a total strip down and clean every 3 months.
I see lesser tripod makes die after just 1 or 2 outings.

So i would say a 3 series is well up to the job.

I ask the same a few months ago and was told to get the Gitzo GT3541XLS Systematic 6X Tripod, great piece of kit and holds the 600 f4 really well its also thel so no need for the centre column

Martin with all due respect you need to start a new thread, It's not good etiquette to hijack a thread so early on :)

Sorry mate, just thought we were looking for the same thing :)

Back to your question,..... I know 2 guys who use the Gitzo 5541LS on their Canon 600mm F/4's, and they love them,..... my first choice too but for the cost.

Martin:thumbs:

I use a GT5541LS which I reviewed here for my 600. It is rock solid and would be my first choice, yep it's pricey but not compared to the 600...! Paired up with a Wimberly MKII it's a insanely strong support. The smaller tripods will support the weight too I have no doubt, but the 5 series has thicker legs and so will dampen more vibration, especially in wind or if you are in a situation where you need to have the legs fully extended.

Cheers Martin,
Yes i know what you mean about the cost...I think they are going for around £600 at the moment compared to £450 for the 3531LS :'(
