Which Gorillapod?

Decided to get Dad a Gorillapod for Christmas now, but just wondering which one. He's new to this lark, and has just bought himself a D3100 and 18-55 kit lens. I notice there's an 'SLR' one on Warehouse Express for £25, but someone on there said it wouldn't hold their D3000. There's appears to be a more heavy duty SLR zoom one for about £35, but that's a bit more than I wanted to spend really. However if that would be the sensible one to go for I'll just shop around and see if I can get it cheaper

Waste of money, I had the SLR version and in all honesty a flashgun is about the most they'll hold safely, with the D70 and Tamron 17-50, neither of which are exactly heavy, it just sagged or flopped around if I tried to attach it to a fence post or similar.

Bah!

I'm really struggling what to get Dad as a present for a starter and thought this would be ideal.
 
I have been looking into some mini tripods recently and the Velbon Mini is supposed to be good quality. I am sure someone on here will be able to give you more advice.
 
Do you actually need a Gorillapod for its flexibility (I mean that in more than one sense of the word :p) or you just buying it as a stopgap until you get a traditional tripod? If it's a stopgap then you can just buy one of those numerous copies available across the web, I got mine from Deal Extreme and holds my Canon 20D + Sigma 18-50 lens just fine and was around £6-7 at the time. Then keep the remainder of the money and save up for something better, such as Redsnaper tripod which can be bought for £50 from the trade section of the forum.
 
I use a GP SLRZoom as a lightweight tripod/support when I go on holiday. OK, it can't really compete with my main tripod on stability but it's a lot better than nothing and can hold a D700 with a 24-70 for a 5 minute exposure when wrapped around a beach brolly with almost no wind. Can hold the same body and lens when carefully set up as a stand alone tripod but as a wrap around thing it's far happier.

Might treat me to a Vitruvian CF if they're cheap after christmas - see if Digital Depot can do any special deal for me for a legs only option (if there is one).

What about this... Trek-Tech-T-Pod... Cracking little tripod - unless its a bendy tripod that your after...
 
I have a D5000 and various zoom lenses and find the DSLR Zoom very sturdy. It has its uses for sure where a normal tripod wouldnt do. For example if you wanted to wrap it round a tree branch or take a long exposure in the car where you could wrap it round the headrest or wing mirror. It doesnt replace a conventional tripod but is great in addition. Speaking of tripods i have the Velbon DF 40 which i find great. It was £25 but looking on Jessops now its around £18 online and the DF60 is down to £25. I havnt tried a Manfrotto etc so cant compare them but it does the job. I also have a Hama Tripod which i got with Digital Photo Magazine as part of the subscription. Thats canny aswell.
