Hey guys.

I am soon to pruchase my first photographic equiptment after a long time.

Previously i was with a company called Pavillion insurance. Who didnt pay out after my 35mm camera got stolen from my car whilst i was under the bonnet.

Anyway. Do any of you reccomend a particular company for photographic equiptment, or should i just stick it under the house insurance?

There was a recent thread (here) reporting good service when making a claim from Tescos Insurance. The following is a copy paste of what I posted in that thread as it may be useful here as well:

Good to hear some positive experiences with Tesco's insurance.

'What Insurance?' threads seem to be quite popular on photography forums and it seems to me (anecdotally at least) that people seem to have less problems with claims from Household insurers than they do from the specialist ones. Here it was Tesco and I have personal experience with Legal and General who were fantastic as well. They settled my claim in full (all new for old) with no quibbles or questions very quickly.

My only advice is to check carefully with them and be very clear exactly what they want listed separately (usually individual items over a certain value) and exactly what cover they will provide (for example, is it covered out of the home and abroad?). I would also keep all receipts although I didn't have all of mine and they still paid out with no problem.

Obviously household insurance will be no good for pros who need the added extras like public liability and emergency equipment hire, but if that isn't needed I would always highly recommend at least looking at what your household insurers can cover.

I use photoguard and although (fingers crossed) I haven't claimed on it yet, I heard other people who have, have had a good experience. I personally find them quite cheap! :)

This question is asked almost monthly. Whatever you do, don't use E & L. Search and ye shall find out why. ;)

Kev.

By the sounds of things E&L have a very high excess of 8% which would equate to over £500 for me and take a long time to pay out. I went with PHOTOGUARD, which gets great reviews on here and other forums. Their cover has the option of a voluntary £250 total excess for a reduction of premium price. They cover transportation, loss from unattended vehicle and equipment hire in their basic policy and I got over £8000 of cover for a £225 premium. And you can pay it by direct debit too. Not had to claim so I can't comment on that but it does give great peace of mind knowing it's covered.

A lot of folk get their kit insured on their home insurance, and I've always done the same, but because I've got a few Ks worth, I tend to pay a little more and go with one of the more premium policies rather than the cheapest (which tend to have more stringent T&Cs that you can fall fowl of when claiming). I tend to look for ones that have all risks, away from the home, with a high unspecified item threshold (eg £2000+), so my 5DII and L lenses etc are all well covered. I think Tesco might even do one like this?

For me the risk of breakage is equal to that of theft. I just dont want my car to be broken into or my house and for it to go :S

well once i have it anyways lol

Just took mine out with photoguard, less than a fiver a month for £1k of cover, i'd be silly not to

Thanks for the advice
Cliff

I'd definitely recommend talking to your home insurer before purchasing a dedicated one, unless you're a pro.

I nearly pulled trigger on a photoguard policy covering £3000 worth for £130 a year. It includes EU cover and 30 days worldwide buy not theft from the car.

Quick call to my home insurer and I found they already covered me for up to £1500 per item up to £2500 total, including theft from the car and 30 days worldwide. New for old, accidental, all that jazz with a £100 excess. To avoid an admin fee I'll increase the maximum to £3000 at renewal.

Safe to say I've not taken out the Photoguard policy!

if you a pro go with a special insurance Steve Bevarage at Cliik. Others faff on claims and have to much small print.

Steve helps you out and gets the job done...... thet is worth more than any thing.

If you not a pro then use your normal house insurance.

This

My House insurance covers ever piece of equipment individually up to 2K so even in I have a £1500 lens on a £1300 camera then they are covered seperatly as they are two items. All old for new aswell:thumbs:

This is what I was driving at in my last post. Take the £100 odd you were going to spend with photoguard and add it to your home insurance premium for better cover, then, everything else is covered for accidental 30 days travel as well, not just the camera stuff (eg my wife's engagement ring or my bike). It's a more efficient use of your money in my opinion.

Oh dear
Another thing I never even considered when I kicked off my camera bug
Think I better check with house insurance whats covered with my gear
Yet more good advice folks
cheers
