I am keen to buy a 23 inch LED IPS monitor after having used my work laptop with IPS screen for some editing. IPS looks so much better than my Asus Laptop screen which is TN.

Main purpose - Photo editing (hobby, amateur)

Secondary purpose - Movies

I can't afford more than £175 or a 24 inch IPS display and I have narrowed down my choice to 3 monitors and need help from forum members to select one

1. Dell U2312HM - Seems to be the most popular in forums. Comes with a fantastic warranty and has better built, swivel and height adjustment functions. Have not seen one in action. e-IPS panel. Read Antigl;are can be distracting. £165

2. LG IPS 237L - New monitor from LG with AH-IPS. I have seen it in a shop and was quite impressed with the picture, but since I haven't seen the other two, I don't know if the other two are any better. Stand is weak and allows only tilt and no adjustments to height. Didn't found the anti-glare distracting, but having not seen the Dell don't know if this is any better with LG. 3 year warranty and checked with LG that it is onsite swap. Bright pixel policy is not as good as Dell. Comes with Color calibration software and with a factory calibration report (does it matter?) £129

3. AOC I2367FH - Same Panel as the LG and most other features are same as LG. 3 year warranty £135

Since I have limited knowledge in this area, I need some advice to select one. Few questions I have are

1. LG and AOC has a new AH-IPS panel as opposed to e-IPS of Dell - Is that an advantage?

2. Dell is almost 2 yr old and the LG and AOC are just a few months old to market - Is there much improvement expected?

3. Dell 2312HM has gone back to Rev A00 is that something to worry about?

4. AG coating - anyone knows if LG and AOC has semi gloss or semi matte AG hard coat?

I am thinking about Dell, sawing towards the LG as I have seen one. Appreciate some views and suggestions.

The LG IPS 237L is 23" not 24, and only 1080P whereas the Dell is 1200P and a true 24"

The LG has terrible ergonomics, and a really crap stand that hardly offers any useful adjustment. It has far fewer options for connectivity too.

I know nothing about the AOC... but it's also a 23" 1080P screen

The Dell is a proper 16:10 1920x1200 screen, well respected, and tested and reviewed by enough people to be a safe bet. I've also used it, and for it's price, I'm utterly convinced there's nothing to beat it in this price range.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The Dell I referred to in my post is the 23 inch version and not the 2412HM which is 24 inch. I am not after a 24 inch atm.

I will be using HDMI only hence not too worried about connectivity, but as you said, the stand and ergonomics of the LG is crap compared to Dell.

I am trying to understand if the new AH-IPS panels would offer any better image quality and in that case and is it worth compromising on the ergonomics and if the AG coating is less visible on the AH-IPS. Pixel level RGB structure tends to prove that, but is that really much of a difference.

Or anything about the other 2 by the sound of it also.

The Dell is tried and trusted and is excellent, a pal of mine bought the LG a few weeks ago and the screen itself gives a better, more natural reproduction of the image than the Dell, the ant1 glare coating is the best anti glare ive seen yet including that on the top of the range Dell 27 and 30 inch monitors, theres none of the feint "silvery sheen" that affect most anto glare panels.

Dont worry too much about stand qualities and limited movement, top of the range £2000 iMacs and Dell XPS one 2710's have the same limited movement, ie, tilt only.

I would personally opt for the tried and trusted Dell though

Why is that? You may not find having almost no stand adjustments a problem, but many do. Connectivity is important for some people too.

I misread the Dell as the 2412, not 2312. That's hardly a reason to be rude now is it? For the record, the 2312 seems to be an excellent screen too.

You recommend the dell, just as I do... what's your problem? The only reason I gave for not recommending the LG was it's stand.. which, in comparison to the Dell's.. is poor indeed.

The Dell U2412 is only approximately 25 to 30 pounds outside your budget... that's very close, and it really is superb screen. 16:10 is a much better aspect ratio to work with, and that extra 200 pixels, while not sounding like much, really makes a difference to having more working space. I;d root around in my loft/shed/spare room for something to ebay to make up the extra to get the 2412.

I have that exact AOC and the IQ is superb. Really nice design too !

Well the one you showed me on display that you said was yours didn't even have IPS. FAIL lol

Didn't want to correct you at the time

Sure you even told me it was 2560x1440 , which incidentally no TV has hahaha

No one other than you ever mentioned the LG as being a 24 inch

Neither did I. I said it was 23 because I misread the dell numbers as 2412... which is a 24" screen.

If you think accusing people of not knowing anything because A) they misread some numbers, and B) because they disagree with you is not rude, then fine.

As for the TV and IPS argument: If it is a IPS TV... that would be a really weird design for a TV. Most LCD TVs use S-PVA for it's superb black levels. Off axis blacks with IPS screens are horrible. Not an issue with a computer monitor as they are designed to be used with the user sat dead in front if it.. TVs aren't. YOu sure it's an IPS TV? What make/model is it?

At THAT price... damn right he should. Excellent screen in every respect. It punches way above it's weight against some much more expensive screens.

There are some TVs with IPS however tommys is not one of them.

Im sorry but yes you did, you clearly mentioned 24inch in reference to the LG therefore my previous statement stands
The LG IPS 237L is 23" not 24
The OP never mentioned the LG was 24 inch so i dont understand the need to correct him.

And if we were to all base rudeness on this

Then we could all accuse you of said rudeness, yes!!!! but that would be pedantic wouldn't it.

As a slight aside, the IPS televisions have been around for over a year now, Currys have one set up in their viewing area in larger stores, the Panasonic seems to be brilliant but the LG seems to have some issues, not convinced the technology is quite ready for large screen TV/Monitor use yet.

£4 over his budget, i would do without fish and chips for my tea on Friday to be able to buy it if it meant getting a 24 inch @ 1920x1200, i really missed the 16x10 ratio when i switched up to 27 inch

Aria are very well respected as well

I believe that is what the kids call an epic fail. Also known locally as "Oh noes he's pulled a Tony", Catch yourself on son, your doing a Tony", "you have had a right Tony here" and other derivative's of.

I wasn't doubting you. I was just saying it's a weird choice of panel for a TV.

I have the Dell Ultrasharp U2312 IPS monitor and more than delighted with it, its fantastic, knocks out of the ball park any other type of monitor.

That was not aimed at you.

It's not really a t.v in the real sense.

L.G do these as a monitor only and as a t.v, it's just a display with a tuner module added. Both have the same part number etc. with one digit different to differenciate between the t.v version and the monitor version.

It's not great as a t.v but then I don't often use it as a t.v very often. My original choice arrived by courier smashed to pieces and I bought this as I sold the cheapy A.O.C monitor I was using before on and needed a monitor in a hurry. As a monitor it's okay nothing special but better than Tony's A.O.C.

I have not had much luck with monitors. I had a 27" Asus monitor with all the bells and whistles from overclockers that went faulty as well.

At some point I fancy one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-U2711-...id=1365664913&sr=8-5&keywords=dell+ultrasharp

Thanks everyone for sharing your views and suggestions. The Dell 24 at Aria is a fantastic price. I didn't consider a 24 inch one, but I'll think about it now.

I have manged to arrange viewing of the Dell 2312 close to my office tomorrow or early next week. They also have a 27 inch AH-IPS model and the new Dell glossy panel IPS. This should help me in deciding between the Dell and LG offerings since I have already seen the LG.

I got a Dell U2412M for christmas and I find it fantastic. The colour rendition is excellent and the ergomonics/controls are excellent too. I've not yet used the USB input on it yet as I've more than enough in the computer.

Well thanks to this thread I've just ordered a 2412 from Aria, that price is unbeatable! If anyone else fancies on tho, heads up that delivery is coming in at £15+VAT, so the actual price is around £198.

Update

I managed to view the Dell U2312HM and U2412M and a AOC 27 inch. I have already seen the LG IPS237L.

In the end I chose LG. Here's my reasons and why it worked for me and that does not mean the LG is the best of the lot.

The Dell monitors win hands down on build quality and the stand - no contest. The Dell 24 inch is indeed a nice size for photo editing and images are shown more close to what they look like aspect ratio wise.

AOC 27 inch (1080p) is a nice size, but only if the distance between the monitor and someone sitting is bit more than normal. On sitting close, the perceived resolution seems less with everything appearing bit too big for my taste.

Antiglare coating - I am not sure if I was trying to look for it or not reading that as an issue, I did find the anti glare on the Dell bit distracting in lighter areas of the image compared to the LG and AOC with the new AH-IPS panels. I checked the LG on my way backfor the Ag coating. It was there, but not as obtrusive as the Dell. Having said that it is not difficult to live with the AG coating and I guess one get's used to it after some time.

Colour and Contrast - I reduced brightness to 30 on all monitors as they were too bright at 100. I must say the LG looked the best with more natural colours than the Dell or the AOC and this in the end was an important factor that swayed me to the LG.

Colour bleed and glow - LG had the least

So, in the end I went for the LG as I found the IQ best of the lot. I am sure with calibration they will look very similar. The AG coating on the LG also played a role in my decision.

I have the monitor setup on my desk and I don't see any issues with the stand. I wish it had the Dell ergonomics, but being a IPS panel, I am not loosing much even if I am off-center or vertical by a few degrees.

In the end I picked up what I liked after a demo and it worked for me and I am very satisfied. I opted for 23 inch since I would use it for a cinema display as well occasionally. I realised that Dell has started releasing AH-IPS panels for the ultrasharp range, but their entry level line is still using the e-IPS panels. As I didn't want to wait, I went for LG and it is a beutiful display. I can't believe how on earth I was editing photos on my laptop screen till date.

Thanks to all who posted their thoughts.
