Which is a newer model

Can someone tell me what is the newer model from these 2

Canon 60d
or
Canon 700d

I thought the lower the number the newer the model but looking into this further it seems the 700 is slighly better

The 700d is newer. Generally the higher the number the newer the model, but it only works when comparing within certain ranges like the xxd or xxxd models, eg 60d newer than 50d or 700d newer than 650d.

Just to provide some confusion, the 6d is newer than both the 5d (mk1/2/3) and 7d.

So its like you have different classes within the

xx range
xxx range

So what are people thoughts on which is better

Yep, you can think of it along the lines of xd = pro, xxd = semi pro/advanced amateur and xxxd = amateur. I'm not saying those categories are strict but it gives an idea.

I haven't used either so can't comment on what's better out of the 60d or 700d, but I'm so used to cameras with a LCD beside the shutter button that the 700d would take me a little getting used to.

Both cameras have similar feature sets, but the older 60D is a bigger, better built body with a larger viewfinder, better ergonomics and more buttons / control wheels. The 60D also has a bigger buffer for continuous shooting.

The 700D is newer, but its a entry based model where the 60D is aimed at high end enthusiasts and semi pro areas
