Which is it?

I've noticed recently two main complaints from pros about the amateurs.

One: they charge for a shoot and then the quality of the work isn't up to whatever standard the pro deems neccesary to charge.

Two: the amateur lets their photos be used without charging. Did you get paid?

Ladies and gentlemen, which is it to be?

Both aspects will always be relevant to a 'Pro' in whatever service/industry - doing stuff for free or doing it 'rough' for cheap will always upset the Pro as it devalues his 'trade' and removes work from the qualified professional service.

E.g. my neighbour is rewiring his own house - he's not an electrician and Part P makes what he is doing wrong. If something goes wrong in the future with a new occupier it will be "stupid $^*@# electricians" and by doing what he is doing he is taking work away from a qualified electrician.

problem with the internet is people can quite happily sit behind their keyboards and be "internet hardmen"... the answer is to try and sort the wheat from the chaff.... ignore the rudest - take the constructive crit from those that give it well.... and don't bite for the trolls.

Go on.. whats the point of the thread?

oh right got it..... and I fed it...damm me! :)

My point was that these two things seem at odds, it seems like a no win situation for someone posting photos.

If someone has had their picture used by someone or a small business or whatever and has not been paid, then the pros complain that you've done it for free. If in exactly the same situation the person has been paid then you complain that the work is not up to scratch, and surely anyone just starting out has to get their foot in the door somewhere?

So my question is why do you seem to want to have your cake and eat it too? Why advise people that they should get paid for their work or its not worth doing, and when they do then charge for the work you say that the work is not worth it?

I dont think doing a job on the cheap is taking business away from anyone. If it wasnt for us cheap newbies, some people just wouldnt pay for a tog at all.

But business is business, its sorts its own guidlines out doesnt it? If people can afford X amount, then they get X service. There's a market for all levels, as there is for every product and service thats ever existed. Feels weird even discussing it, i mean we've all agree the earth is round, so why cant we accept the reality of capitalism?

your pictures.. do what you want with them... only a fool will get hung up about what half a dozen people on a messageboard say....

That's actually good advice KIPAX

But why are we here then?

I did a cousins wedding because She had no money, did it free and drove Her to the Registry office as well .

Never again, bloody nerve wracking experience never to be repeated.
Is your driving that bad then??

As to the original question, photographers in general are one of the few "professions" that give away work, my local cafe doesn't dole out free bacon sarnies and mugs of tea, why? because then they go out of business. My garage doesn't do services for free (bloody expensive in fact) why? because if nobdy paid they can't pay wages and keep going.
Yet some togs are happy to work for nothing, trouble is it then devalues us all, joe public expects us all to "do it for free".
Fine giving away pics if you work in tesco for a living and photography is a hobby, but I wonder how you'd feel if sainsburys started giving all their food away for free, how long would your job in tescos last??

Certainly not to take decisions on whats to do with your pictures based on what some pro togs tell you to do on a messageboard... or have I just repeated myself? :)
