That'll be the Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G ED VRII, yours for around £5k.

But seriously, we need a budget and a purpose to give any helpful advice :)

More realisticly the AF-S 300mm f/4 at around £700
Or the Nikon 70-300 VR at £300-500


Depends on used/new and budget of course.
If you come back and say £100 then you might aswell give up on the idea of a 300mm now!
 
The Nikon 70-300mm lens is a great lens for the money, you can get it used for about £300 and around £450 New i think. The Nikon 300mm af-s f4 lens is a fantastic lens for its price range, at around £700 used or brand (uk) new £950 it's the cheapest telephoto prime Nikon do.

I first brought the 70-300mm and I've got some great sharp shots with it. I upgraded to the 300mm f4 as I seemed to always use the zoom at 300mm.

To be honest it depends what you want it for, if I go out to photograph deer or birds it's the 300mm f4 every time, if it's the zoo I'm going to its the 70-300mm for the zoom.

If its your first 300mm lens then you can't go wrong with the 70-300m vr lens, most people seem to keep it when they upgrade to the 300mm f4 which says a lot about the quality of the lens for the money.

There are rumours that Nikon are going to upgrade the 300mm f4 to a vr version soon but its been a rumour for a couple of years now. Perhaps go for a used excellent condition 70-300mm and then save up for the 300mm f4.
 
Another vote the 70-300 VR. For 'sensible' money, it's probably the best option though the new Tamron 70-300 VR deserves consideration too as many people are saying it's better.
 
What about the Siggie 100-300 f4 ex dg apo :shrug:

I had one before I got the nikon 70-200 vr & vr II cracker of a lens - I used it on various crop bodies (D40, D60, D80, D90, D300s)

Used it would be within your budget...
