Hi
I am unsure which Lee filter kit to go for as when they come back into stock.

Is a Digital starter kit necessary, or would the standard starter kit be ok?
The only filters i have used before are screw in type so please excuse my ignorance.
I already have a Lee wide 77mm adaptor ring which i picked up at a car boot of all places.
Since joining on here i have seen many landscape photos used with a Lee ND grad and been blown away with the results, so would love to give it a go.

Do you really need to buy either kit?

Have you considered the foundation kit? It's just the filter holder really and then purchase suitable ND grads for what you intend to shoot.

I have both soft and hard but use the hard much more, see the other thread on Lee http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=198357
my second post a bit down the page.

Hi
Yes i was just reading it but i am still either being thick or unsure of what i need.

So i will have a Lee foundation kit with a 77MM wide adaptor, will the 84mm x 110mm size filter from Hitech fit the lee filter holder?

Also i will be taking mainly water scenes, moving tide, waves and waterfalls, i cant afford both now so do i need soft or hard filters and what is the main differences?

thanks in advance.

Joe Cornish recommends Hard if you have to choose between one or the other. I have hard and don't wish I'd got soft.

Lee filter holder is 100mm so the above Hitech filters won't fit. However I'm sure I've seen people say they use Hitech filters with the Lee holder. Do Hitech do any 100mm wide filters - don't know as I've got Lee.

For seascapes etc I would say get the hard edge filters. Soft edge tend to be more useful when you have hills and mountains etc. to handle.

Take a look here http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-lens-filters.htm for a good explanation.

Thank you that is a great link which i will read in depth later.
The more i think about it the more i think i will have to bite the bullet and buy Lee filters to ensure a good fit.

I use Hitech filters using a lee holder+
wide angle adaptor ring in my lens size (luckily all are 77mm)
Hitech filters can be bought from http://www.formatt.co.uk/default.aspx, and holder from warehouse express, speedgraphic etc

been using them over a year now and they're great

I've got Hitech 1.2, 3.0 ND, 0.6 + 0.9 Hard + 0.6 + 0.9 Soft ND Grads

hard grads you use when the transition between the sky and ground is a very straight line, soft grads you use when the transition between the sky and ground is a uneven, such as mountains etc......even though, if using a crop sensor camera, the hard filters are made a smidgey bit softer than if using them with full frame

few places to read up on i found useful

also great articles on here > http://www.nd-magazine.com/articles/

oh another tip i learnt is that the water reflection of a sky for instance is two stops (0.6 filter) darker than the exposure of the sky

I must second Drew's comments about Hitech. I purchased a set of .3, .6, and .9 soft edge ND grads and a 3.0 ND from http://www.teamworkphoto.com/ about 2 years ago and have nothing but good things to say about them.

Also, like Drew, I use them with a Lee holder, and have no problems at all. I can stack up to 3 filters, which works with everything except ultrawide angle lenses like my Nikon 12-24mm. Again, like Drew, I got a 77mm wideangle adaptor to use with that lens and can then use all 3 soft grads for up to 6(!) stops contrast difference!

Highly recommended and way cheaper than 'real' Lees.

if using the lee filter holder on an ultra wide angle will it show in the picture at say 10mm?

I suspect at full wide angle it will vignette, the way I currently get round that is just to hold the filter in front of the lens with my hand and don't use the holder.
What is the dia of the 10mm, I may get a chance to try it out with a filter holder next week as I'm at the Canon roadshow, and I'll try it with my Lee filters.
Al my lenses are for full frame.

OOPS just seen you are on the dark side, and we're currently at Lee working on some developments for ultra wide angle.

Formatt.co.uk - The Hitech camera filter range is available in 85mm and 100mm

The filters you're after are Stills Filters and available in two sizes - the 100mm will fit in the Lee holder.

Don't know about Nikon but with a Canon 10-22mm lens and a W/A adaptor it dosn't show at 10mm. I have two slots on my holder as Lee made me some special combined N/D grads and warm up filters so don't need three slots but I also have the 105mm Pol ring at the front.
