Which Lens and Flash?

Hi

It's the wifes 50th in a few months and she is expecting me to take loads of photographs of the occasion, although I think propping the bar will be a better way to spend the evening.

I currently have a D5000, with the built in flash, with the 18-55mm kit lens.

So my questions are:
Would I benefit from buying a secondary flash unit, which might only be used once in a blue moon

Should I use this occasion as an excuse for purchasing a new lens, which would probably get more use as I do quite a bit of indoor stuff.
If so which lens?

I'm thinking that most shots will be a mixture of candid and of groups.

I would also take this opportunity to say what a great place this forum is!!

Thanks in advance.

Nifty Fifty - nice wide aperture, ideal for indoor shooting, and less than £100 from Kerso on here.

FLashgun - Definately - If your not using often, then get Jessops own brand or a Yongnuo from Flash in the Pan on here. around £50-60.

However, get them now and get some practice in!

I agree with the above but if you want a lens that would autofocus on the D5000 go for the 35mm 1.8 instead. Bit more money and its the equivilent of 50mm on the crop sensor. I back up the flash suggestion of the Jessops one.. very good for the money and good results too!

My choice would be the AFS 35mm f1.8 for the D5000. FITP does some Nikon compatible flashes and at about £50-60 they are good value and will be ideal if you are not using it that often.

Think FITP was selling a 35mm 1.8 af-s. Check the sale forum.

just get a flash a jessops 360af or a nikon sb-600, your lens will be fine inside.
dont be tempted by a primes cheap prices. you won't find it very flexible inside, especially a 50mm.

if you did want to replace the lens, look at perhaps a sigma/tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens.

the trick with the flash is two point it straight up or at 45 degrees. never fire it at peoples faces.

Thanks guys, all helpful stuff.

I think I'll get myself a flash first and see how things go with the kit lens then perhaps look at the 35mm.
