Which lens for canon 60d?

Hi

I am about to buy the canon 60d (body only) and rather than buying the kit lens I would like to get a lens that would suit my photography.

I already have a 24-80mm and 90-300mm kit lens sold with my canon film SLR. I know the ratio will be different but at least it would be something to put on my 60d.

What lens(es) would you suggest? I am mainly into portrait photography.

What's ur budget?

For portraits I have always read a 50 or 85mm prime is a good length on a crop body. If u need more versatility there are 17-50/55 f2.8 lens or the 15-85mm which has great reviews.

I have a 50mm f1.8 (nifty fifty) and its a great sharp lens for portraits for only £80.

a cheap fast prime at 50 or above, id recommend keeping a eye out for a cheap 18-55 or similer too, its nice to have that wide angle

As mentioned bycmcm789 grab the 50mm f1.8 as it offers good value to IQ ration which on the 60D should be good for portraits.

I'd see how you get on with your 2 lenses initially with the 60D, then go from there.

You can decide if you want something faster or wider or a better zoom etc...

For your budget I can recommend the sigma 18-50 f2.8 ex DC macro lens (the macro part is important as its the improved version). I recently sold one on here for £130 so you should be able to pick one up for that. It goes to f2.8 and is sharper than the kit lens I had.

Personally I would avoid primes until you know what focal lengths you like.

do you know where I can buy it from? On the few websites I have looked it seems it's out of stock.

I believe it is no longer made as they replaced it with the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 OS version (which has optical stabalisation), but this would be out your price range. I'd search on ebay and here
